Musicians have become histor- pically minded, noted Sir Ernest MacMillan in the course of the sixth annual Samuel N. Robertson Memorial lecture which he deliv- ered last evening at Prince of Wal- es College.

He pointed out that in the past four centuries composers were kept busy supplying music for cur rent performances. In our own time. by contrast, it is exceptional for a concert to be of a recently composed work. Sir Ernest was speaking on the theme, "Some noblems of the Canadian Com- poser.” and gave a comprehensive rnvlew or the difficulties confront-

Sir Ernest had much to say about audience reaction. The fol- lowing exerpts from his remarks deal chiefly with that subject.

"After many years of concert giving with an organization depend- eat on public support. I am bound to say that audiences as a whole are definitely conservative in their tastes. This is not by any means confined to Canada. It is discourag- ing at many of the Philharmonic concerts in New York to see so many people walk out before a new work is to be performed. A few years ago when l was attend- ing the Edinburgh Festival, a newspape conflict was raging on the subject of modern works; many were in favour of enterpris- ing piugiammes but it seemed generally agreed that new works had an unfavourable effect on at- tendances.

"These observations may seem trite and obvious but they deal with an attitude which must be overcome if musical composition in Canada is to progress. Whether we like it or not. our compose a are almost all contemporary and most of them speak in a contem- porary idiom. It would be futile for them to do otherwise. They can not. even if they would. produce more Beethoven symphonies or Mozart operas. On the other hand we need not assume that the most adventurous are necessarily the most original or that their works will outlast those of their more conservative brethren.

Our audiences. I am afraid. have not yet learned to discriminate; the more conservative reject well constructed and expertly written works on the ground of "ugliness". while I am afraid some of the nvant garde accept what a more critical listener would dismiss as mere musical doodling. The gramophone record has pre- sented us with unprecedented op- portunities for repeated hearings of almost any music we can spare the time to hear. In this field however. the Can- adian composer suffers from espec- ial handicaps. His name is not widely known outside of his own country; even within it. where performances are bound to be comparatively few, all the valiant efforts of the CBC and others on his behalf have succeeded in pub- liclzlng him only to a very limited extent. The larger recording com- panies therefore do not find him commerclaly profitable and we have practically no support from governmental or private sources such as many other countries en- joy to redress the balance.

NATO's 3 Wise Men Plan To Move Swiiily

OTTAWA (CP)-NATO's Three Wise Men plan to move swiftly in devising ways of welding the Atlantic alliance into a. more cohesive economic and political force.

External Affairs Minister Pear- estimated Monday that the mas sive job of mapping out a line of strategy. designed to counter Rus- sia's coexistence tactics- will be completed by next fall.

It then will be up to the gov- ernments of the 15-power council to decide whether to bring the strategy into operation. He said the work of the three-man com mittee will be "not unlike a royal commission." The right-hand shaft of thel wagon in which they were driving apparently broke off- striking the heels of the horse. The animal then b startled and bolted down the road with the wagon swervlng violently from side to side. The two men managed to hang on for a distance of about
