Gardiner Favors Selling Portion of Butler Surplus On Wodd Market

OTTAWA (CP) Agriculture Minister Gardiner indicated Tues- day he favors disposal of part of the gover-nmeni't butter surplus in world markets.

"it is just as proper to export hulter when we have too much as it is to import butter when we haven't enough." he said in an in- terview. Canada imported butter from New Zealand during a 1951 shortage.

But currently the government holds a record stockpile of some 79,000,000 pounds and the question of disposal has aroused varying views. The government stockpile represents an investment of some S-tR,0ilfl.000 of the ta x p a y e r 15' money.

The Canadian Association of Consumers recently suggested that if the government exports butter at the world price-about 20 cents a pound lower than that prevailing in Canada - Canadian consumers also should be able to get butter at that low price.

The National Dairy Council. rep- resenting Canada's dairy manufac- turers and distributors. said it op- posed exports at below cost. Rather than have the government sell butter to persons in other countries at low prices. Canadian consumers should get the benefit of the ctlt. '

UNITED NATIONS. N. Y. (CP)-Russia has joined the rest of the United Nations in unanimously approving President Eisenhower's plan for the peaceful development ,of atomic energy. The 60-member political committee Tuesday adopted .a resolution endorsing negot atomic energy agency to operate the plan, and for an in- ternational conference of atomic scientists to be held next

summer.

It was the second time in three weeks that the West and Russia have agreed on a major subject. On Nov. 4. the assembly unanim- ously instructed the UN disarma- ment commission to resume talks toward limitation of armaments and prohibition of nuclear weap- ans.

EIGHT-YEAR STALEMATE

Until this unanimous agreement on disarmament, the West and Russia had been stalemated on major issues for eight years.

U S. delegate Henry Cabot Lodge, who acted as spokesman for the seven powers sponsoring the resolution in private concil- iatory talks with the late Soviet delegate Andrei Vishinsky. hailed the unanimous action as a ”his- toric mommt" that promised "en- ormous good to mankind."

UN Secretary-General Dag Ham- marskjold said that by the action the UN has "embarked upon a course that may well prove epoch- making."
