Friends of Mr Henry McGurk here will regret to learn that his condition has become serious in the Charlottetown Hospital where he underwent. an operation-last week following two months illness at his home. He was .cinoved to hospital some weeks ago.

For years fishermen here growl- ed about tomniycods in their smelt nets and tossed them into manure piles or into the river. Now it has been found these fish are valuable and in demand. This week Mr. Frank Laybolt caught a ton of the fish in the bay and hauled them to the Island sea Foods in the city where they are frozen and shipped out. This writer made a special trip to the sea. foods plant to see those fish pouring in. We are informed they are a. tasty dish as near like trout as any fish could be. We are informed there are loads of them in the bay right now and smelt fishing has im- proved in the river this week. Mr. and Mrs. Len Ryan, and Mr, Joe Mac-Donald were business visit- ors to the city on Monday.

The by-roads have been ploughed right down to the clay this week and are no good for the sleighs.

What might have been a dis- astrous fire was narrowly averted recently by the prompt action of Gloria Condon, young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Condon. when she was awakened around 5 a.m. by the crackling of fire in an adjoining room. She quickly summoned her father who by his cool headedness and persistence kept the fire which was also burn- in the attic under control un- til he received assistance from neighbors. MONTREAL (CP) - Morality squad detectives Wednesday night raided a westend establishment for the second time in two weeks and seized 19 slot machines stored in the rear of the store. The establish- ment is owned by Marcel Papin- eau. former president of the Notre Dame de Grace BusInessmen's As- sociation. Mr. Papineau resigned from the association following the first raid. in which three machines were seized.

LITTLE SANDS

..'school opened here after the Christmas holidays on Jan. 10th. The teacher, Mrs. Dean Blue of Hopefieid. had I. very enjoyable visit with her sisters. Mrs. Cassie Reynolds and Miss Sadie MacKin- non, who do civil service work in Ottawa. she visited many points of interest, the most interesting being a tour of the Parliament buildings. she met a. number of Islanders in Ottawa. Two of these were Mrs. James Harris, nee Kay MacNeili of Little Sands. and Mr. Sydney Stewart of High Bend. No doubt Mrs. Blue has many inter- esting scenes to tell her pupils about.

We have not .aeen the snow plough in these parts this winter. Although this is a main highway there has not been enough snow to warrant the use of the plough. But as I write. the plough went through the western part of Little Band: to the County line. scraping the road. There was a lot of mud and slush along the road which has been pushed to the sides.

There has been no ice in the strait yet this winter. and large and small steamers and ships con- tinue to travel up and down and are seen quite frequently by day and night. The lights at Cariboo and Pictou Island continue to send their nightly flashes across the streit. What company these lights are.

Mr. Hugh MecNeill. Little Sends, reports seeing a robin red breast last Saturday. Others have also reported seeing these birds during the last two -weeks.

Large flocks of starlings are seen around the fields and as one watches them, darting up and down. swooping back and forth, one wonders at the wonderful way in which they manage to .fly about without ever injuring one another. No collisions therel One minute they are all flying in the one direction. the next instant they have turned all together. swooping and turning in perfect harmony.

We are glad to report that Mr. Raymond Livingstone. formerly of I-Iopefield. now of Charlottetown. is steadily improving. Raymond suffered a severe heel and ankle injury in a. fall while working at the telephone wires. We hope he will soon be well again.

Mr. Lonnie Gamble of Wood Is- land: has been doing considerable lumbering in Little sands lately and'bad weather does not prevent Mr. Gamble from his daily trips to the woods.
