Has Made Daily Flights Since Sept. 1950 .With Air Evacuation Squadron

Peace talk in Korea has not mm. any significant difference in the duties of the group 0! Army and Airforce nurses now serving in the Korean area. One of these nurses, a native of Kilmuir. P.E.I., lit. Lt. 5. Katherine McDonald. has been on the Korean airlift and has made daily flights from Korea to Japan since September, 1950.

As a night nurse with the U. 5. Air Force, her duties frequently take her to within hearing range of artillery fire, when they land on make-shift air strips to pick up patients. casualties of the United Nations troops, from aid stations behind the fighting lines in the combat zone.

Presidential Citation

Lt. MacDonald is a member 9: the Mist Medical Air Evacuguon Squadron, which along with two ”"'" Air Force sroups ”received the first 5 esidentlal citation awarded . to any unit since the outbreak of ' the Korean conflict". "The um, un ts were cited for opergtiom in the Chosen Reservoir” and other areas.

."The 801st Medical Air Evacua- Wm squadron was cited for the 5 gallantry and heroism displayed . while participating in battle cos. Lillty Evacuation operations in !xorea.l The squadron was respon- sible for the evacuation or 1,443 casualties”, following severe fighting operations, "from Suwon and Kimpo airstrips. This operation was car- ried out under the fire of large concentrations of enemy troops in the surrounding areas. The squad- ron was responsible for evacuating the war and weather casualties from Hagaruri and Kato-rl alr- strips".

The citation reads in part: "rhe members of the 801st Medical Air Evacuation squadron in both these operations unhesltatingly risked their lives again and again in or- oer to provide the necessary med- ical attention to the wounded members of the United Nation's Forces." Day after day there was little opportunity to eat or sleep.

Lt. Col.
