| hides, egg, butter. and canned lobsters from i this port; and Whereas, The increasing trade of this port |requires more efficient and speedy means of | carrying to market the said surplus produce, ‘not only to Charlottetown, but to the Provin- | cial perts, viz,: Shediac and Pictou, in order j to meet a more ready market for said surplus |} produce; and

Whereas, The steamer ‘‘ Heather Beile” | was only kept on this line until the last day |of October in each year, during her terms to | this port, after which a large amount of pro- duce was left om the shippers’ hands each ; year; and no direct communication could be obtained, therefore incurring considerable loss | to shippers; and | Whereas, The shipping port of Victoria is ata distance of eleven miles from the nearest railroad, therefore incurring considerable ex- pense to send said produce overland to said station;

Resolved, That the Local Gevernment of this Island do subsidize a good and sufficient steamgr to run feom this port to the above named Provincial ports, viz., Shediac, Pug- wash and Pictou, to perform two trips each week during navigation,

Mr. A. Shaw took the platform and ex- plained the inconveniences the surrounding districts are subjected too, as regards carry- ing off the surplus produce, and alse put a resolution to the ineeting, seconded by O. B. Wadman, and as follows:

Whereas, The large amount of produce shipped from this port yearly, and igh 4s largely increasing, demands that the 10] Government subsidize asteamer to be on the route between Crapaud and or Shediac; and

Whereas, the harbor of Victoria is miles from the nearest point on the P. E. Island Railway, and having no direct steam communication with the Provinces, this large and important community is completely is- olated from the markets of the world, and the advantage of speedily placing our different kinds of produce in competition with those of the neighboring Provinces.

Therefore Resolved, That the people of this community feel keenly the loss which they yearly sustain from want of intercelonial steam communication, and are of opinion that the Dominion Government should vote a sum of money as subsidy to sustain a boat on said route which, this meeting is of opinion, would to any company, in a few years, be a financial success.

Carried unanimously.

Hon. Wm. Campbell fully concurred in our first resolution and promised to insure us a steamer to run between this port and Charlottetown but as that is quite in- sufficient to the wants of this large com munity andas the inhabitants are deter mined and consider it nothing but our just rights, on having communication with the Provinces.

It was proposed that a petition be im- mediately got up to the Dominion Parlia. ment insisting that a grant be given to the inhabitants of this part of the Island to subsidize a steamer to run to the said Provincial Ports of Shediac and Pictou, as other harbours or ports have received large subsidies for to improve their harbors and navigation, which movement was quite in accordance with Mr. Campbell.

Several gentlemen spoke very strongly in favor of the movement. Among the num- ber were D. W. Palmer, Wm. C. Lea, A: Shaw, George Palmer, D. Matheson, John Moore, A. Collett, many of whom declared that this part of the community was fast retrogading for want of speedy means of carrying off the farmer’s surplus produce, that having no direct communication with Provincial ports, had drove the pork and butter trade nearly out of our market, as merchants had no certainty of sending said surplus to market, and also stated that the ‘‘ Heather Belle” was taken off this line the last day of October, when her services were most required.

After getting through with our steamer business Mr. J. Bradly submitted the following resolution, seconded by O. B. Wadman and A, Collett :

Whereas by the Terms of Union between this Island and the Dominion it is provided that the latter establish and maintain efficient steam service between the Island and the Mainland of the Dominion winter and summer, for the conveyanee of mails and passengers ; and

Whereas Parliament in fulfilment cf said Terms, and being con:inced that the Capes are the only possible winter route, that it last session voted a sum for the construction of a branch line from some point on the P. E. Island Railway to Cape Traverse.

Whereas, It is desirable that the said branch line should be located as to expedite the transmission of mails and parsengers to and from the “apes, and at the same time afford the farmers of inland districts a means of con- veying their surplus produce to market, and removethe difficulty they at present experi- ence in obtaining coal, limestone, and mussel- mud, upon which the success of their farming operation so largely depends ; and

Whereas a branch line from the P. E. Island Railway coming at or near North Wiltshire, and terminating at Cape Traverse would ac- complish the desired object, it being the shortest and most direct route between the Capes and Charlottetown and any point in Queen’s and King’s Counties, while it leads | through the important settlements of North Wiltshire, Lot 30, and Kelly’s Cross, and also ithe large and flourishing settlements of |Crapand, Tryon avd Cape Traverse, which jare the first agricultural districts on the i\Island ; and

being built, would find its way to market by rail and be regulerly employed in carrying lumber and coal to the interior of the coun- try, together with that of the varicus factories established in this part of the country and other industries that would naturally follow, would result from the general freight and passenger trafiic, would equaily contribute to jthe earnings of the road, and confirm us in \the opinion that the Capes Traverse route ‘would be the best paying one on the Island. Therefore Resolved, (n the opinion ‘of the ‘necting it is desirable that the proposed Cape | Traverse Railway should tap the P. E. Island | Railway at or near North Wiltshire; being fully | convinced that 1t would bein the interest of | the general Government and a yreat benefit to | a large majority of the electors of the Island, |28 well as the public generally, if said branch ,connected with the main line at or near the part indicated ; and

Whereas, This meeting was held pursuant to public notice in the press of this Island, and our local representatives no dobbt must have noticed it ; and

Whereas, The Hon. P, Sinclair is at present one of our local representatives.

Therefore Resolved, That this meeting Fe- grets the absence of Mr. Sinclair at the meet- ing convened to make known the general public requirements.

Carried unanimously.

The meeting. was largely attended and was very enthusiastic, and broke up very orderly and respectfully, wherein a vote of thanks passed to the Chairman for his able conduct in presiding over the meeting.

Southport Merry. To the Editor of the Examiner.

Mr. Eprror,—Allow me the privilege of reminding the public interested in the improvement of Southport Ferry of the necessity of iminediate and combined efforts, in orderto bring about che Yedress of a grievance which possibly might be tolerated in Russia, bat in no other country making pretensions to civilization.

Ata meeting neld in Southport, it was an upapimous opinion that nothing short of an extended wharf to the channel could meet the growing requirements of the coun- try. Resolutions were passed to that effect, and delegates appointed to wait on the Government, in conjunction with delegates from other places, and present petitions asking for the extension of Southport wharf to the channel, and efficient steamboat ac- commodation.

Now, Mr. Editor, there is nothing un- reasonable or impracticable in this request; and if the matter is fairly laid before the Government, they cannot hesitate for a moment in removing froin our midst a griev- ance which so sadly retards the progress of one-half the Island.

It would be impossible to calculate the loss this Province sustains from insufficient ferry accommodation. The time lost by farmers and their teams waiting to be ferried across, the loss by detention from business, the annoyance and suffering from cold and wet, the sickness and deaths caused by exposure while waiting for hours at atime on the wharvea, and the risk of life from drowning, spring and fall, while wading through slush and over dangerous ice, is beyond all human calculation, to say nothing about a direct tax of from $10.00 to $50.00, per family to keep up this iniquit- ous imposition, which is worthy a consign- ment to the by-gone ages of tyranny and serfdom, When you consider that we are taxed besides all this to build expensive bridges, and macadamize roads to admit our more favored friends living north and west of the city, at all hours of the day and night without toll, or witho.t stoppage of any kind, you cannot butlend your aid in our behalf, and do your utmost to bring about the required improvements.

The united efforts of the inhabitants south of the Hillsborough with that of the citizens of Charlottetown, aided by a united press, will bring about the necessary re- form and put Southport Ferry on a solid foundation.

Let meetings be called in every school district on this side of the river, and ap- point one or more delegates from each meeting, to present petitions to the Govern- ment, signed by every elector in said dis- tricts, praying for the extension ef*South- port wharf to the channel, and efficient steamboat accommodation with reduced fares. Let the citizens of Charlottetown take up this matter and consider their own interests, by calling a public meeting to demand uninterrupted communication with the south side of the Hillsborough. Let them aid their country patrons for once in demanding proper atcess to the capital. And let every public journal in Charlotte- town, irrespective of party, come to the front and utter no “ncertain sound on this all-important subject. Wake our slumber- ing city friends. Rouse the farmers to united action. Move the people and you move the Government with an irresistable lever.
