With 200 “refrigerator cars on hand and with about 40 arriving daily. transportation facilities have at last caught up with Island po- tato ahippers‘ requirements and are even in excess of the demand. according to railway officials in- terviewed yesterday.

All through the season, strong complaint; were voiced with re- gard to the refrigerator car short- age, and the subject was debaind warmly in the Legislature on sev- eral occasions last month. N.) criticism was made with regard to the local railway officials. but it was claimed that heavy losses were suffered due to the failure to give priority to seed potato shipments.

Total shipments from the Prov- ince since Sept. l5. last. were 8B0 cars, or 060.000 bushels more than (or the corresponding period of ca." 1940-1947 shipping season. Butter Sold At Top Price in Error

UITAWA, April iii-Officials of Canada Packers Ltd. today said that. through an error part of a shipment of inferior butter was sold in Halifax at first-grade prices.

Three of the company's officials appeared before the special Prices Committee. Questioning made it clear that some of thebutter was probably passed to the public as top-quality.

Probe 0f Berlin trash Deadlocked

BERLIN, April 13-The joint British-Russian investigation of the fatal collislon.of a British air transport and a Soviet fighter ran into a deadlock today when the Russians refused to hear any but British and Russian witnesses.

Whether the investigation will be resumed became questionable when the Russians objected to hearing German and American witnesses to the collision April b which cost 15 lives.

British members of the inquiry commission insisted that all wit- nesses who could contribute infor- mation be heard. The British said ‘may though Americans especially should be heard since two Ameri- cans were killed aboard the trans- port which crashed while nearing Berlin along the air corridor link- ing this Capital with the Western zones-

Palestine Commission Gives Report

LAKE SUCCESS. N. Y. April l8 (GB-The United Nations Pales- tine Partltion Commission warned tonight that military forces must be sent to Palestine to avert chaos after May 15 resulting from in- tensified strife between Arabs and Jews.

The report of the five-man com- mission appointed last fall was is- sued after the United States pro- posed that the Security Council order a standstill on all political activities in Palestine.

These developments in the tang- led Holy Land situation followed the proclamation by the General Zionist Council in Tel Aviv that a Jewish state will be born in Pai- estlne May l6. the day after Brit- ain relinquishes her mandate.

Regardless of what the 57- member Assembly decides to do about the plan to divide Palestine into Jewish and Arab states-- vihich 1t passed last Nov. 20- troops will be urgently needed, the Commission sald- .

"The steadily deteriorating situ- ation ln Palestine leads to the 1n- escapable conclusion that. in the absence of forces adequate to re- store and maintain law and order in Palestine following the termin- ation of the mandate. there will be chaos. starvation, widespread strife. violence and bloodshed in Pales- tine, including Jerusalem," the 42-pbge report added.

Veterans Minister Gregg an- nounced the Government has vir- tually doubled helplessness allow- ances, pald to disabled ivar veter- ans auch as parapleglcs who need the help of others in their daily lives. They supplemeit pensions for such men.

The Minister told the Commons Committee on Veterans Affairs the Cabinet had agreed to its recom- mendation that the maximum an- nuhi payment be raised from I150 to $1.400, the minimum from c250 to $480. This recommendation came originally from the Canadian Leg- ion.

The change. coupled with tho proposed pensions increases, means that a single man getting a full pension and a full allowance wolld have $2.444 a year.

The allowances now are paid to 743 veterans, with annual liability of $316,064. The increase would raise the total to roughly $1,000,000 in the estimation of Brig. J. L. Melville, chairman of the Pensions Commission.

Reaction split two trays. One faction, launched by Maj. Howard Green (PC-Vancouver South). pressed for continued hearing of evidence in an effort to convince the public. if not the Govern- ment, that the present proposal was inadequate.

The other followed Col. A. J. Brooks (PC-Royal) in arguing that further evidence was useless, that members had their minds made up and that there should be an immediate vote on the motions.

Mr. Matheson said the reduc- tion from 25 to 20 oen-ts a ton on coal and coke shipped within the Marltimes would be made retro- active to April t. 1t will result in a saving of approximately $200,000 annually to Maritime shippers and conalgnees, he said.

The reduction resulted from communication between Mr. Matheson and the Board of Transport Commissioners. 1t. was pointed out to the Board that a flat rate increase of 25 cents a ton on coal and coke subject to the Maritime Freight Rates Act was in violation of that Act. _
