NEW YORK. (AP)—All but four of the country's 48 states are lined up for participation in the mass polio vaccinations to begin within a week. the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis said Wed-

nesday. Massachusetts and Minnesota nave withheld authorization for

the program. saying they prefer to wait and see how it works out in the initial stages in other regions.

Maryland. Arizona and the Dis- trict of Columbia have decided not to take part because of delays in the start of the process and early closing of schools in their areas.

"There ,was no question as to the safety of the vaccine in those states at all." said a spokesman for the foundation supervising the project

Library Report is Submitted

In the report. of the committee on the Legislative and Public Lib- rary submitted iii the Legislature this week, the cost of the Library to the Provincial Government for the fiscal year ended March 31, 1954 is estimated at $11,440.

The report draws attention to the bound volumes of island newspapers from 1823 to the pres- ent time which are stored in the basement of the Public and Legis- lative Library. "They are a price- less and irreplaceable record of the day to day history of our Province from its early colonial days". Requests for consultation of these records are made from time to time by scholars doing re- search work in Canadian history and by our people trying to track down incidents of local history or references to family associations.

The committee deplores the con- ditions under which the public and the librarian have to consult these records and suggests as a remedy the installation of standard metal cabinets with locked doors to keep out dust and the ravages of time Space for a reading table and chairs would also be available un- der the alterations and improve- ments suggested.

The Canadian Library Associa- tion which began to film Canadian newspaper files in each Province in 1948 in a long term effort to provide copies of scarce newspap- ers in cheap and readily available foim has to date put the following P. E. Island papers on microfilm: The P. E. Island Register, 1823- 1830: Royal Gazette dz Miscellany of the Island of Saint John. 1191-. i192. (this newspaper is privately owned): The Islander. 1800-1871.

In summing up. the report states "It is a. fact that our Prov- ince possesses one of the most complete newspaper records of its history throughout the llith and present century. The social Ind political history contained in them is replete with interest. not only to ourselves. but to scholars else- where. It is a matter of shame to the Librarian when a scholarly visitor requests to see our news- papers and has to be put off with the answer that there are no faci- lities for study of them-

CHICAGO. (AP)—I-Iaving tuber- culosis—-and being cured of it- may actually mean a longer life for a person than it he never suf- fered TB. an insurance doctor re- ports.

Dr. Harry E. Ungerleider of New Yorkpsays this is one of the indi- cations from one of the most de- tailed insurance studies ever made of life expectancy among people having physical “impairmenis."

The physician, of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States. told the American College of Physicians in a paper prepared for today that the re- cent analysis involved studying the records of 725.000 insured individ- uals and 18,000 deaths in some 132 “impairmenLs" i-lassificauons.

He said the findings are based on the experience of 2'! insurance companies. representing '70 per cent of the ordinary insurance in force in the United States and Canada.

The doctor said the survey showed that if a person survives five years after his TB has been “an'ested." the possibility nt deathi is no greater than it would be for the average person of the same age.
