[he New Potatoe Barrel.

For some time back a good deal of dis- satisfaction has been experienced among farmers in reference to the various barrels, tubs and other measures used in measuring potatoes. Asa rule, our Island farmers prefer selling their potatees according to measure, not by weight. The difficulty has been that potato buyers not having any legally stamped tub or barrel, were under the necessity of making barrels of their own. These, in many instances, were (oubtless correct enough ; but it was felt, i the interest of all concerned, that a uniform, legally authorized measure should be determined on. The Island representa- tives brought the matter to the notice of the Minister of Inland Revenue last winter, and tlie Inspector of Weights and Measures has introduced, a new potatoe barrel which will meet the requirements and wants of merchants and farmers generally. The new barrel contains twenty-five Imperial gallons. ‘This barrel should be made of good, sound hardweod, eighteen inches diameter top, and at the mouth aé straight as it. can be made—that is, with as ~little bulge as _ possible. Any person who wishes can get his own barre! made and if made accerding to law and of the proper size, there will be no diffie.lty im getting it inspected and stam) ed by the Inspector. The barrel, ¢s we have said, must held twenty-five Imper- ial gailons. As the Imperial gallon of pure water weighs ten pounds, consequently the barre! must be made to contain two hun- dred «nd fifty pounds of pure water. Clean rain water is the best. Salt water must

Tue third annual cempetition of the Queen’s Co, Rifle Association is being held to-day at Kensington Rifle Range. Stewart and McLeod, have so far recovered from the injuries they received in the late railway accident, as to be able to be ont again. Scheinman Mason Morris’ battery of garrison artillery held their semi annual shooting match at Kensington Range on Saturday last. Sergt. Younker again succeeded in winning the battery cup. Gunner Heustis won the silver cup presented for competition by Mr. G. KE. Laylor. Large’s trotting horse ‘* | ittle Fred” won second money —$100.00— in the races at Montreal. ‘The time made in the race was 2.244. The despatch does not state the class in which ‘‘ Little Fred” trotted; but we presume from the time made it was the ‘‘free-for-all.”’ By winning such a prize ‘ Little Fred” adds fresh laurels to our Island horses.
