-TRIAL BEGINS - The trial of Leonard Philip Thlbeau of Kensington on a charge of break- ing entering and theft opened in the County Court Judge's Crim- inal Court before Judge L. G. Lewis in Smlmerside yesterday and after several witnesses were heard was adjourned till th morning. Thibeau is changed with breaking into the Semple's Drug and Jewellery Store. Kensington, last Remembrance Day and ac- cording to the evidence of the proprietor jewellery to the value of s12.000 was taken. A charge of jail-breaking has also been laid against the accused for allegedly escaping from jail while awaiting trial. The o'Leary Marocns received their first defeat of the season on Saturday in the oiLeary Rink. They have won four. tied one and lost one this season.

Band music can be very inspir- ing. When the spirited strains of martial music are heard. many youths square their shoulders and

decide to enlist in one of their country's services. A tender love song starts a train or thought

which leads to matrimonial ad- ventures. But those who have progressed in years beyond those elementary emotions love to sit on park benches and listen to band music too. For them: "the night shall be filled with music. and the cares that infest the day, shall told their tents like the Arabs and as silently steal away."

Alberion Legion Stresses Problem Of Home Defense

A special meeting of the Al- berton Branch No. 15 Canadian Legion. was held in the Legion Hall on' Jan. 26, 1951. The meeting opened in the usual manner fol- lowed by roll call of officers. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. There followed a discussion on home defence as set clown by Dominion Council. It was moved by Comrade viti. seconded by Comrade H. Dilli- that the Federal member be sent the folowing resolution: To urge the Government to total prepar- edness by (1) National Registrat- ion. (2) Mobilization of industrial resources for defence production. (3) Compulsory training in our reserve forces.

These points were emphasized in a letter forwarded to Mr. J. Watson MacNaught, M.P.. at Ot- tawa, in which reference was made to "our proven' state of unpreparedness in 1939 and its regrettable consequencesi" and to the fact that the present state of international relations is arousing great concern among the people. The letter to Mr. MacNaug;ht was signed by the President and Sec- retary of the Branch.

OTTAWA. Jan. 29 -(OP) - The C. C. 1''. national executive today asked the Government to oppose the United states resolut- ion asklng the United Nations to declare Red China an aggressor in Korea.

A statement from a meeting of the national executive here dur- ing the week-end said the C. C. r. "ls opposed to any step at the U. N. or elsewhere which will place further obstacles in the way of a negotiated settlement in Korea and Asia Ktnerslly."

The C. C. P. believed that the U. N.. if it adopted the U. 8. resolution, would be "ln danger of Osacrificlng the friendship of n Iprge proportion of the people of Asia and of disrupting the unity of the free world".

MIRYANG. Korea. Jan. 29-(CF) - For Canadian troops hero. eager for battle experience. mid-Febru- sry seems farther away than a mere two weeks.

That's the deadline for comple- tion of the traininl of the 2nd Battalion. Prlnceao Pat.r.icia's Can- adian Light Infantry. Time d-ya ihere is a barely-suppressed "let's get going" feeling in the camp.

The troops, whose training ex- ercises have gone smoothly on the whole, feel they are individually ready for combat. and chafe under completion of the indoctrination period agreed upon before Christ- mas by their commanding officer. Lt.-Col. J. M. Stone of Edmonton and Salmon Arm. B.C.. and the late Gen. Walton Walker of the United States Btlh Army.

This attitude. widespread among the men. is constantly toned down by Col. Stone and the company commanders. They remind the riflemen that theirs is only part of the job. Behind them must function company and battalion headquarters. together with sup- porting weapons.

To get the whole team function- ing, it is necessary for individual rlfiemen to go through the vari- ous basic drills time and again.

There is a great. contrast to con- cern expressed during the Pa.tricias' Pacific crowing that they would be rushed into battle before they were ready.

Morale High

Morale is incredibly high in' what Col. Stone and other observ- ers (includlnig this correspondent) believe will be the best trained and equipped unit in the Korean war theatre.

Although well outfitted against the cold weather i-n which they have been training. the Patriciss likely will get the breaks in that direction when they go into action. Winter is on its last legs in Korea and spring is due March 1. At the most, there will be only a brief period of cold to withstand. Re- placing the cold, there will be mud and floods. as spring rains melting the snows turn virtually dry riverbeds into raging torrents.

At the moment in South Korea. night temperatures vary between zero and 10 above, while the ther-

Need Better Boots

The only beef concerns boots. Canadian army boots now seem cold to the troops but that factor is disappearing with the prospect of warmer weather soon. More serious is the discovery that the boots will not stand up to moun- tain climblng. Rocks chew away the soles while the uppers crack.

Col. Stone has authority to buy U.S: Army combat boots .but first is trying for a supply of hobnails. The only criticism observers of- fer wbout this idea. is that at night the nails might. strike sparks from the rocks. besides being noisier.

it took the troops a while to accustom themselves to wearing pyjamas as underwear instead of "Lon-gjohns", an idea developed during Exercise Sweetbriar in Northwestern Canada a year ago.

There are no beefs about wea- pons or vehicles. The Patricias pack more of both than United States battalions, which are not self-administering. The Canadians also have as much transport as most British brigades.

Once under way, the battalion expects to give up the tents in which it has been living here at Miryang and use slit trenches. With two stoves in each tent and with scrounnged rice-straw mats on tthe floor. the men have been snugly housed at their training camp. The army supplies oil for one stove and the troops buy wood for the other if they want more heat.

Cpl. Willis-m O'Brien of Pictou. N.S.. and Guelph. Ont., who felled the first two Communists killed by the Patriciu in Korea, said he hoped the equipment the men will carry into battle will be scaled down.

"rho South Korean police in that recent anti-guerrilla action carried just a little bundle of rice and ammunition and climbed tht hills hnpplly," he said.

The Korean police, however. had not expected to spend the nights in the mountains and the Parr-iciss had to force them to say. Some of the Canadians loaned the Koreans one of their two blankets out of

Col. Stone. who has considered the question. believes most items carried are essential.

Mail Arriving speedily

Mail has been arriving well. it normally takes 10 days to two weeks for letters and parcels from Canada to reach here. although some get here in only five days. No James Ramsay. 19. of Edmon- ton reported he had two parcels. each received within 12 days of mailing in Edmonton.

But little home news in arriv- ing. 'tCanadlan News Briefs". a 200 to 300-word daily feature in the Japan News. Tokyo-published troop-sheet which arrives here two days after publication. apparently is made up of items sent to Tokyo by mail. The troops do not hear a Tokyo nightly newscast of Com- monwealth . Mwlp including 1,000 words of Canad-ion material.

The Patrician are slated to re- ceive four radio sets capable of receiving Tokyo. which will be dil- iributed among the mpanies. They still will not be enough for a company must rely on unde- pendable reception and will not match the printed word.
