’ Classics department to be ' 'dismantled? '

In a recent interview with James Kelly, it was learned of ‘Senate’s pending debate regarding the Smith Com- mittee’s recommendation to dismantle the Classic depart- ment.

Kelly, who is chairman of the department, stressed that “for anyone reading the report with an unbiased mind, it is clear that the recommendation to dis— mantle is not a hostile one.”

The committee prefaced this recommendation with an earlier one urging the Uni- versity to re-affirm the importance of Greek and Latin studies by maintaining

two tenure — stream posi- tions in Classics. This would be achieved by lodging the two professors and their courses with the history and language departments. t The Smith Committee, which is the Senate Com- mittee on Academic Priori- ties and Long—term Academic Planning, was intended to be the main effort on the part of the U.P.E.I. to order its academic activities to best cope with its tight resources. It examines every academic department in the University and offers an assessment of their condition of operation and in most cases offers recommendations for the

future.

The recommendations, in some cases, included an up- grading or development of programs, while-in others no change in status resulted with the suggestions for improve- ment.

The recommendations in some cases indicated a lowering of status. This could be achieved, in a sense, by linking existing majors with some other discipline to form a joint major.

In the case of Classics, however, there would be an even further reduction. “The department,” Kelly said, “even in its present state has never had the right to

The Senate of the Uni- versity is proceeding system- atically through the findings of the Smith report and is now preparing to debate the recommendations pertaining to Classics.

SU setsup committee to study College

The SU Council voted Sunday to set up a student- faculty committee to examine long-term effects the Atlantic Regional Veterinary College will have on UPEI.

The council picked three students to the five-member committee and will be seeking two additional members appointed by the Faculty Association.

Its object will be to examine the economic and academic impact of the new college and weigh the positive and negative effects.

Student members on the committee are SU President Jack Keefe, Michele Dorsey and Kenny Baker.

The formation of the com- mittee is a result of discussion among council members about the college. Construc- tion on the new facility is to begin this year.

Keefe expressed concern in light of recent meetings in Charlottetown of provincial education ministers. He said they seemed to favor the idea of having universities spe- cialize in certain areas, and he said he is worried UPEI could be left specializing in veterinary medicine.

Keefe said he’s also worried about the distribu- tion of educational funding

UPEI has three choices as to the status of the Atlantic Veterinary College within its own structure, reports the chairman of Senate’s ad hoc steering committee on the College.

The three are: —-l) integra- tion as a faculty within the university, 2) federation with the university, and 3) affilia— tion with the university (the most remote .pf' the three defining relationships).
