Great Britain for any financial aid so long as the war lasts. In spite of necessaiy expenditure upon local defence, the total expenditure has been drastically cut down, and the revenue con- siderably increased by heavier taxation and by the sale of war certificates on the British model. All this has been achieved in spite of the fresh loss of markets for Newfoundland produce resulting from the extension of the field of war. And tlic necessity for rigid economy has not prevented attempts to develop new industries as part of the war effort, particularly the building of small ships.

Out of the tiny population of under 300,000 over 2,000 have already enlisted in the Royal Navy, where they are maintaining the high re- putation of Newfoundland fishermen for cour- age and scanianship. Some of them gave their lives in the heroic and self-sacrificing action of the Jervis Bay. Under the Empire Air Train- ing Scheme some I30 Ncwfoundlandcrs are in training in Canada, in addition t0 the large num- bcr who are already serving in this country in the ground staffs of the R.A.F. and to those. who anticipated the Empire scheme by enlisting in the Air Force either in Canada or Great Bri- tain. In fact it is hoped soon to constitute a Newfoundland squadron of the R.A.F. to take its place with the other special squadrons which make the R.A.F. in a vcry real sense an Imperial, or rather an international, force. Moreover New- foundland has raised two regiments of heavy artillery, one of which is helping to man the coastal defences of Great Britain, while the other is partly in Britain and partly still undergoing preliminary training in Newfoundland. To all these must be added the great force of New- foundlandcrs who are doing such valuable work in timber cutting and logging in different parts of Great Britain, and the many who are serving at home in the small but very efficient Militia force or as home guards for local defence.
