-Finals To Defeat -Falcons 4-3

Three runs in the eighth in- ning which wiped out a 3-1 Char- lottetown Fa-lcons' lead. gave the Cunran and Briggs baseball. team from Summerside a 4-3 win over the Mentmen to go two games up in their hunt for the Island League title. The game. played on Mem- orial Field before a large crowd of fans. was in doubt right up to the final inning.

Benny Carson went the distance for the locals. limiting the C. and B. team to three hits while walk- ing two and striking out ten bat- ters. Joe Bernard was the win- ner for the construction .crew. He relieved Alan Stewart, who start- ed the game. in the fourth frame with none out. He allowed but one hit in five innings. walking one and striking out seven.

The locals opened the scoring in their half of the first inning when they scored one run.

In the top of the fourth Surn- merside tied up matters with a singleton but in the home half of the same inning the locals went

The top of the eighth saw the visitors score three runs when two walks, a hit. two passed balls. and three errors combined for their runs.

The locals put runners on base in their half of the eighth but could not get them farther than second base.

Each team made but three hits during the long game. However, it was erratic fielding on the part of the locals that mined their chance.

Doctors find Joe Louis in Good fighting Shape .

POMPTON LAKJN. N. .I.. sent 20 -(AP) -The stethoscope was applied to Joe Louis today and the former heavyweight champion was termed in his "best fighting shape since the war."

The official medical examination. conducted by Dr. Vincent Nardlel- lo oi the New York State ALhiet'c Commission, was the next to 113'. before the Brown Bomber meets lhzard Charles at Yankee stad- ium next Wednesday night for the heavyweight championship.

"Joe has a slight head cold but it's nothing to get excited about," said Nardielio, "no fever. no red- ness of the throat. should be gone in 24 hours."

Mac- Klnnon and his Baron and Senator Craigmyle with Teddy Weir handling the ribbons. took a heat each in that order to force the issue into a fourth and deciding heat. All four heats produced some terrific chang- ing battles for the lead position around the mile course to finish in almost dead heats at the wire. Making masterful drives down the home stretch for his winning driv- es. Colonel Macxinnon really earn- ed his race honors against the pressing drives of the rival team- sters. The number three classified saw Harold stead's O. U. Volo go away in front in all three beats and come under: the wire a winner in each case. only once being head- ed by any of the other three entries in the race. Lily Mar- lene. handled bx Charles Willis. headed the Volo orse in the third heat right to the upper turn going into the home stretch before Stead pulled his charge out for a winning drive to the finish wire. Rosalie Hooper and Lily also made it close going in the first and second, and made nice drives coming home but just couldn't head the Volo horse.

At a recent meeting of the dir- ectors of the Charlottetown Forum Ltd., Mr. C. F. Archer. the manag- er. was given leave of absence. Mr. Archer has been a patient in the Prince Edward island Hospital for more than a year and a half and is consequently unable to contin- ue his duties. He has been manag- er for 15 years and has had a suc- cessful record in nagement and promotion. His many friends hope that continued as C and rest will restore him to good health. Name of Mr. Archer's successor has not yet been announced.
