Meeting of Presbytery.

The Presbytery of P. E. L. met Church on the Ist inst. There were pre- sent: Rey. Messrs. Frame, Cameron, Arch- ibald, Raulston, Carruthers, McMillan, Mason. Gillis, John McLeod, A. Js. Mce- Leod, Campbell, Mahon, Spencer, Fisher, McKenzie and J. M. McLeod, ministers, ind Messrs. T. C. James, D. A. McLeod, Donald Beaton and Isase Thompson, ruling elders.

The congregations of @rwell Head_peti- tioned Presbytery for moderation in a call to one to be their minister, guaranteed’ an annual salary of $560 and « manse, and asked for a grant of $200 from the Augu- mentation Fund. Betore granting their request the Presbytery agreed to meet with them and with the congregation of Belfast, in the Orwell Church, on the 23rd inst., at 1 o'clock, p. m., with the view of so recon- structing the whole field as to make two self-sustaining congregations.

it was agreed to ask the Augumentation Committee for the following supplements, viz ; $100 for Tignish, Montrose and Elms- dale; $150 for Cove Head, and $250 for Brooktield. Other applications for supple- ments were allowed to lie on the table till a future meeting.

The Western Committee of Presbytery was instructed to meet with the cengrega- tions of Brookfield, Cavendish and Clifton, with the view of so reconstructing their congregations as to make Brooktield self- sustaining. This Committee reported that they had visited the congregations of Alber- ton and Bloomfield, Tignish, Montrose and Elmsdale, and West Cape, Campbleton and the Brae. With regard to Alberton the Committee report that the pastor is faith- ful and conscientious in the discharge of the various parts of the pastoral office, that the elders aid the pastor in taking the oversight of the flock, and seem sincerely desirous of promoting the spiritual welfare of the congregation of which they have been appointed rulers ; that the pecuniary obligations of the congregation have been fully met, and that their liberality to the ischemes of the church is encourarging. | the Northern Light.

| Froma passengar enthe Northern Light ‘from Pictou on Friday, the 28th Jaumary, we learn that the Northern Light on that trip ;gave unmistakeable evidence of that yessel’s power and suitability as an ice-boat. During the passage very heavy ice was encountered, and on some occasions ice fully ten feet thick was broken. The Captain and officers of the Northern Light display great skill in handling the steamer, and no doubt their long experi- ence in this service enables them to make a passago when it is at all practicable.

It cannot be denied that at some times it is a matter of impossibility for any steamer to cross, especially when heavy fields of ice have been jammed together with a north east wind ; but from what we learn, and from the fact that the Northern Light has, on several occasions, and notably on the 28th January, been far able to outstrip the Neptune, the famous **Swoiler.” The ice boats of the future should be modelled ona similar prin- ciple to the Northern Light. <A heavier steamer with increased power, manned by an experienced crew like the one in the Northern Light, would do good service in winter navi- gation so far as such navigation is practicable.

We are desired to testify to the courteous and gentlemanly conduct of the Purser of the Northern Light (Mr. D. D, Ryan) who for many yeers has filled this responsible position,

Shaw, Returning officer at St. Catherines, acted improperly at the last November election ; but he takes care to conceal the “desperate” and, indeed, inflammatory conduct of a violent Grit—one McLean by name—who was really and in fact the cause of any little disturbance that took place on the occasion referred to. Sir, —Your readers have the statement of these two gentlemen befure them, and | am satistied they will not hesitate whom to believe. No one who knows Mr. Beer would for a moment think that he would invent a statement such as that to which he has affixed his name.

Mr. Beer directly charges that Mr. Sutherland and one of his friends came to his house with a large supply of liqnor to back them up. Mr. Sutherland’s answer to this is ‘‘I defy him to say that T had a drop of liquor in my poses ion.” Does Mr. Sutherland take people to be fools! Can- not every one see that- he is guilty of a
