—The Canadian Gazette, (London, G. B., remarks that the public life of Sir John Macdonald is only exceeded in length by that of two British statesmen. While Mr, Gladstone’s service to his couotry extends over fifty-one years, and Earl Granville's over forty-seven, Canada’s Premier comes next with forty- one. Sir John has, however, served longer in office than any British states- mau-—even than Earl Granville, though his term reaches twenty-eight years.

—A despatch has been received from Mr. Van Horne as follows: ‘Have examiued the entire lice from Kamloops ; the most savguine expectations of light- ness of work to be done will be more than realized.” Upon which the Montreal Herald remarks: “This is good news both tor the Company and the Country. It places beyond all doubt the correctness of the statement that the advance made the Company by the Dominion Government will be more thau ample to meet all contingencies. It is also an assureuce that the road will be opened through at the early date promised by the Company, the heaviest of the work on the Lake Superior section having been accomplished, and the magnitude of the under'aking in the Rockies being cou- siderally reduced. Major Rogers has persistently urged that the difficulty of construetion in the mountains would be fend less than was generally supposed, and Mr. Van Horne’s careful estimate, fom personal examination of the country aid o' the work remaining to be done, eudorses Major Rogers’ favorable report.”

The woman’s name is supposed to be Mary Riley, from Cifton, New Loadon. A key found in his pocket opens a trunk with the name Mary Riley upou it, and a boek found in her trunk has that pame on it. A team has been sent to New Londo» after her father. When he arrives a ver- dict will be returned by the jury in the inquest held by Dr. Jarvis.

The young woman who suicided from the steamer St. Lawrence last evening 1s believed to be Mary E. Riley, of Ciften, New London. A key found in her pocket opened a trunk ‘eft in the steamer marked Mary E. Riley. In the trunk a Bible was found with same name. Mr. John Wood- side, of Clifton, also identified her. The Coroner’s jury adjourned till her parents arrive.

Whiskey as Medicine.

Among the more interesting of the blu covered series of books issued by McLean, Roger & Co., of Ottawa, under the aus- pices of the Dominion Government, is a small work entitled ‘Return of Liquon sold to parties in Prince county, P. E. L., under the Canada Temperance Act.” It 1s a work of 63 pages, closely filled with a record of the pints of various kinds ot liquor sold by authorized vendors under the act, the same being furnished for medicinal purposes by prescriptions from physicians. The name of the dealer, the quantity and kind of liquor given, the per- son who gets it and the doctor who pre- scribes it, are given in each case [t will be apparent that much interesting infor mation may be extracted from a work like this. The first thing which strikes the reader is that the favorite medicine in P E. Island is whiskey. Some doctors seem to prescribe no other liquor Take for example Dr. Bearisto. On the 7<h of March, 1883, one dealer, J. A. Gourlie, by name, filled the following prescriptions written by this doctor. To Moase, 4 pints, To John Bethune, 14 do To Thos. Frizzle, 15 do. To Mr. Wutiam Tanton, 4 do. One Dr. Varrach, is a great prescriber of liquor. Ona the 4th August last he gave 12 liquor prescriptions amounting in all to 8 pints of brandy and 7 pints of whiskey. On the 7th he ordered 2 pints cf whiske; each for three sick men, and the same quantity of brandy for one. On the 9th, he sent persons ty vendor Grady with instruc- tions to get 6 pints of brandy and 11 of whiskey. ‘The next day he administered 3 pints of whiskey, and the next day aiter 6 of whiskey and 4 of brandy. The best day’s selling for one vendor appears to be that of Mr. Gourlie who disposed of 76 pints of whiskey, 15 of brandy 80 of ale and and 8 of spirits, all by prescriptions on the 20th of January. Perhaps the case of H. E. Wright is as sad as that of any other invalid. He had an order filled for 2 pints on the 7th. The medicine did not cnre him and he had the dose doubled three days later. Yet we find him on the 14h so far from recovering that he had a pre- scription filled for 12 pints—all whiskey A close investigation shows that there are many invalids }ke H. D. who take their medicine regularly, and seem to get no better. And there are many doctors who prescribe enormous quantities of whiskey notwithstanding the fact that it seems to do no good.

Five hundred bales of grey cottons are being shipped at Montreal per steamship | Brooklyn for England by D. Morrice & Co. It is said that the cottons are already sold from a sample bale and were a re-order. It is claimed that the price is about seven- teen anda half cents per pound, or a little higher than the lowest price some cottons were sold out to dealers here. It is claimed that at the regular price it will yield a projit, but whether upon the cost of manufacture or not, is not stated. | The cottons are understood to be partly Hochelaya B and partly of St. Croix, N B. manufacture. {

The second heat they went away weil together at the second attempt and were at the quarter post in 314 seconds, Johnston an open length in the front. Their relative positions were not changed to the half, which was reached in 1.053 At the end of five furlongs Johnston responded to a call of his driver and quickly opened a gap of half a dozen lengths, and won ina joy by rwenty lengths in 2119. In the third heat they were given a send off at the first trial. Johnston shot half a length in the lead and ‘nereased steadily, going to the quarter in 34, half in 1.08}, three-quarters in 1.41 nd finished in 3.13}, nearly distancing Richball.
