Even in this era of strife with the world divided into two armed camps. and the spirit of comprom- ise a casualty to the conflicting ideologies of the time, Christmas is -still a magic word for us all. In this period of unrest the Yuletide is doubly welcome, renewing as it does our faith in ultimate victory over the foes of Christian nations.

The Christmas season renews us in many ways. I-lomecomlngs and family reunions hold for us a spec- ial Joy at this time of year. The "Santa Claus" that entrances childhood must have an older brother who fills our hearts instead of our stockings with a friendlier feeling towards our fellow citizens. and compassion for those less fort- unate than we. Christmas giving is undoubtedly warmer than that other form of "giving" which has

Of course, there are the off-color nedktles. the marathon shopping tours which prove conclusively that the female is deadlier than the male. the post-office line-ups, and the post-mortem "please remits." None of these. however. can dlin the magic and the merriment of these most wonderful weeks of the year.

Child Rescued From Drowning Al Summerside

-Five-year-old Billie Glow, son of and Mrs. Edwin Clow, narrowly escaped drowning yes- terday morning when he broke through the thin ice at the elec- trlc light pond.

He was rescued by Mr. Harold Bryanton and Fred Arsenault, who were working nearby' and heard his cries for help and those of his playmates. The two men crawled out on the ice and dragged the youngster from the water which is said to be about eight feet deep at this point.-S

The Woman's Missionary Soci- ety of Trinity United Church held, their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, December 4th in the, social hall.

The president, Mrs Lee Saund- ers, opened the meeting by giving an introduction to the new study book for the year 1953. "Along African Trails". This book, just off the press in 1952. was written by Rev. D. H. Gallagher, associ- ate secrelary of the Board of Overseas Missions of the United Church of Canada. He journeyed to Angola and adjacent parts of Africa to improve his understand- ing of that territory.

Africa is called the "Land of Tomorrow". It is also the judg- ment seat of God for. the white race. Race relationships are be- coming an increasing problem. The Africans are awakening and want their rightful share of the blessings that come from the re- sources of their country.

Placed over the door of a col- lege in British West Africa as a symbol is a portion of a keyboard. This shield embodies the ideal of race relations. It is possible to play a tune of sorts on the white keys, and it is pork-ll”-i to tune of sorts on the black keys. but for harmony it An A... use both the black and the white.

The Mission Band. under the leadership of Miss Mary Morrison and Mrs. Leigh Kennedy present- ed a delightful program.

Child Escapes In Accident

What could have been A fatal accident occurred yesterday morn- ing at Unionvale, near 0'Lcary, when five-year-old Nancy Adams. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Adams, was struck by 0. light truck. The accident occurred on the pavement near her home. Mr. Robert Campbell, Alberton, driv- er of the truck steered the vehi- cle off the road in an attempt to avoid striking the child, who was apparently walking well out on the centre of the road. Mr. Camp- bell was knocked unconscious when the truck went into the ditch and turned over but was removed from the vehicle by a passeimer. Ernest MaoMillan and recovered five minutes later. i

A doctor was summoned to at- tend to the little girl, who made her own way home: and she was found to be suffering from scratches and bruises on her face where she was in collision with the truck.

Damage to the truck was not extensive.

S'side C.W.l Monthly Meeting

The regular monthly meeting Of the Summerside sub-division of the Catholic Women's Leaeue was held Wednesday evening in the Knights of Columbus Home, with a good attendance.

The president, Mrs. Wilfred Perry, presided and opened the meeting with the league prayer- Minutes of last meeting were read by the secretary. Miss Margaret Wedge and adopted.

Mrs. Joseph Linkletter, corres- ponding secretary read letters from the following: Mrs. L.L. Noonan. provincial president. regarding reg- istration of all C.W.L. members in case of a disaster; Mrs. J.E. Rossi- ter, provincial convener of magaz- ine: Sister Frances Loyola, thank- ing the league for its contribution: Sidney T. Green, president of T. B. Leagiie: Rev. Thomas J. Walsh, S.J. national director radio programs for Canada: Mrs. C.H. McGuigan. regarding lay retreat; Mrs. Joseph Callaghan re forming St. Veronica's Guild for Catholic nurses: Mrs. .VIedius Wedge for good wishes sent during illness; Mr. Dan Arsenault for sympathy extended.

The financial report was given by the treasurer, Mrs. Laurier Pet- ers and approved, all bills being voted to be paid.

The following conveners gave brief reports of work done during the past month. Mrs. Emily Gal- lant. sick conven'er reported sending three cards and making seven vis- its. A new committee was formed and it was voted that gifts and fruit be sent to the sick and shut- ins.

Mrs. Thomas Linkletter reported on tag days held recently, thanking those. who helped in any way dur- ing the sale. It was moved and sec- onded that a'letter of thanks be sent to Mr. James D. Arsenault for use of his place of business as headquarters during the sale: Mrs. Carol Delaney. Girl Guides: Mrs. Joseph Linl-rletter. membership: Mrs. Frank Arsennult. social serv- ice: Mrs. W. Galant. press; Mrs. Abdon Arsenault. entertainment.

Mrs. Earl Hickey was appointed to act as convener at communion breakfast on Sunday. December 7th. As a ways and means of rais- no funds it was decided to hold card parties with Mrs. W. Gallant acting as convener.

Monies voted by the sub-division included 025.00 to :the Kinsmen Club toward the Christmas tree fund: 35.00 to the T.B. League: 35.00 to the Sisters of the Precious Blood: 525.00 to Sisters of St Mary's Convent: 85.00 towards Christmas party for Brownies. and for capsules for children of St. Mary's Convent.

Rev. Father MacLeod spoke brief- lv on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and on the great Saint Francis Xavier.

School Parade Friday Featured Birthday Party

The programme on scnurmans School Parade last evening was presented by the Ellerslie-Bidelord school and the half hour pro- gramme was dlvlded into two parts. first a birthday party in honor of Charles Llnkletter, the genial master of ceremonies, who is pres- ently A patient in the Polio Clinic at Chsnottetown. The second part of the programme featured ex- cerpts from the annual nativity pro- gramme given by this school. Heard on the programme were songs from "Snow White And The seven Dwarfs." "I-ieish-Ho". ”The Dwarfs” Yodel". A French folk dance and "Waltzing Matilda."

The students prepared a hugh birthday cake for Mr. Llnkletter and presented a shower for the patients at the polio clinic.

The second part of the pro- gramme centered around the Christmas theme with such num- here as no Come, 0 Come, Em. manuel" a choral rendering of "Maghlflcat" with piano accom- paniment of "Ave Maria". These selections were interspersed with appropriate selections from the story of the nativity, followed by "It Came Upon The Midnight Clear". "Gloria" and "Little Town Of Bethlehem." The programme ended with the Bach chorale. The programme was under the direct- ion of Mrs. Found accompanied by Mrs.lLogie. Amisting were the teachers Miss MacDoanld and MIN Miller and the school chorus cori- slsting of some 20 voices. excellent in tone quality and diction.

At the conclusion Mr. Mercer thanked the Ellerslie-Bideford school on behalf of Mr. Linkletter and the patients of the Polio Clinic. The recorded programme. cards and cake will be sent to the Polio Clinic on Monday. the date of Mr. Linkletter's birthday.

The last. half of the Schurman School Parade program consisted of a keen competition between Cape Ti-averse school and Central Bedeque, school for the quiz champ- ionship in the 1 to 3 classfoom div- lsion. and the right to win the sil- ver and French bronze shields emblematic of first and second places respectively.

Although Central Bedeque had won the silver shield for two con- secutive years. and a win would have made them permanent owners of this shield, they were edged by Cape Traverse. who took first place and won the championship with Central Bedeque second. winning the French bronze shield. Elaine Green of Central Bedeque won the Jack pot question sent in by George Champion of Kenslngton.

Next week the last. program will be presented before the .semi-fin- als in the talent parade, and the battle royal between six or seven larger schools for the quiz champ- ionship in that division.

Eliminatlons will be held at 4:30 in the Summerside High School llbl'8I'y. The two schools scoring highest will meet in competition at 8:00 o'clock next Friday evening. December 12 for the senior champ- ionship.

According to the article Willie is on his way up to the Leafs and he is described as the most refreshing of the new players to Join the Hornets this season. The writer, who is Peter Thorton of Pittsburgh, states "In Marshall one can see a combina- tion of Migay. sollnger and Gor- die Hannigan. He is fast on his skates, hangs onto the puck like a leach and has a deceptive swerve that makes him as easy to hang
