Mr. Blaine is fifty-four years of age, |

having been born in Washington County,

Penusylvania, January Sst, 1830. Adopting journalism as a profession, he became part owner and editor of the Kennebee Journal in 1854, and editor of | the Portland Advertiser in 1857. He

was one of the organizers of the Repub- lican party in Maine, and served in the State Legislature from 1858) to 1862, the last two years being Speaker. In 1862 he was elected a sentative to Congress and was re elected for each successive term until | 1876. He was speaker of the House of | Representatives from 1869 to 1874, and was again the Republican candidate in 1875, but was defeated, the Democrats then having a majority in that body. In 1875 and 1880 he was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Presi- dent, but was defeated by Rutherford B. Hayes in the one case and by the lamented Garfield in the other. In 1876 Mr. Blaine was appointed U. S. Senator from Maine to fill a vacancy and was subsequently elected for the term expir- ing in 1883. This position he resigned in March, 1881, to accept the Secretary

ship of State offered him by Mr. Gar- field. Soon after the assassination of President Garfield, Mr. Blaine tendered his resignation to President Arthur, by whom it was accepted, December, 1881. Since that date he devoted his energies to secure the Republican nomination of 1884—a scheme which has been crown- ed with success.

Gen. Logan, who occupies second place on the ticket, has a good war re- cord.

A rew weeks ago, in the course of a public address, Mr. Laurier said “a Liberal must be born a Liberal.” This is undoubtedly true. Modera Liberalism, as we know it, is so abhorrent to com- mon sense and the dictates ofan educat- ed conscience, that its devotees must have been ‘‘born’’ Liberals, just as some men are, unfortunately, born blind.

jut, how about Sir Richard Cart- wright? He was not born a Liberal ; but for many years lived a strict Con- servative. Whereshall we place him?

His withdrawal from the ranks of the Conservatives was not due to a con- viction that Conservatism is a very bad thing, or that Conservatives very ad men; for, at the time of his withdrawal Le expressly stated that he left the Party only because he could not endure Sir Francis Hincks as Finance Minister. Here is a copy of the identical Jetter in which he did so:

‘My Dear Str Jony,—I notice, with great regret, that Sir F. Hincks has been gazetted. From the tenor of my former note on the subject you will probably not be surprised to learn that I fear that I can- not support that gentleman. Of course, as in duty bound, I will wait your explana- tions of the grounds of this appointment; but it is so unlikely that they will be such as to enable me to concur in it, that I think it only fair to notify you at once that ! should inform you that, however well dis- posed I was or am towards yourself and the rest of your colleagues, I cannet feel the same confidence as heretofore in an administration in which Sir Francis Hincks holds office. So far as you are concerned I do not suppose one supporter, more or less, mat-

ters much just now, and so far as I myself am

concerned, I am thoroughly alive to the grav- ity of the step I am taking, but this. is a matter in which I have no option. ** Yours very sincerely, ‘* Rienarp J. Cartwricur.”

Now, in view of this letter, in which, after a long intimacy, he expresses con- fideace in Sir John and respect for his colleagues—except Sir Francis—what position does Sir Richard occupy in politics? ‘That of an Adullamite!

Mining Regulations.

The London Mautieal Magazine says :— ‘©The name borne by the largeet number of vessels is Mary. There are over 200 sailing vessels and 5 steamers named Mary, over 100 Mary Anns, and about 700 vessels in which Mary is the first word of the name. Next to the Marys come the Eliza- beths, Janes and Sarabs, and then the Wil- liama, which alone of male names exceeds 100, A very lerge namber of the names in the list are Christian ; and perhaps next to them is @ class of names in which the word Brothers occurs, indicating, doubtless, a partnership in the vessels. There are 89 Brothers (of which 26 hail from one port— St. Johns, Newfoundland), 42 Two Bro- heen 36 Three Brothers, 20 Four Brothers, 7 Five Brothers and Six Beoth- ers, 8 Seven Brothers, 2 Nine Brothers and Ten Brothers. Four Silsbys in the Town.

The Chicago Sun contained, some} months ago, an elaborate account and the} working of ‘‘Town of Lake No. 1’ fire en- gine, made by the Silsby Manufacturing | Company of Seneca Fails, N. Y. No. Lis one of the nickel-plate machines, and other- | wise highly finished, and the test then | made was of the most severe kind and Was | highly satisfactory, s0 much so that the | town officials acce pted her at once, and she | was placed on duty. Tho next Silshy pur- chased was for the Union Stock Yards, and | is of the same size and power, but is with- | out the nickle plate finish.

Last week another engine for the Engle- | wood District, and now another for the Car Shops District—the two latter having the nickel-plate “finish—have been delivered. | The Epglewood machine was tested success fully, and the Car Shops machine | through the same ordeal at Dexter Park, | Wednesday afternoon, and proved that she | was equal to all that was claimed for her. | She was accepted, and Fire Marshal Swenie | ordered her into service and sent her to the new engine house at Forty-seventh Street | and Wentworth Avenue.

These four purchasers of steam fire en- | gines, in go short a time, has not been | equaled by any town of its population in | the country, and shows what faith our) town officials have in the Silsby. The tests | were all satisfactory, and what work the | machines have done since being tested has | been all that could be wished.

Trial of the new Silsby Steam Fire En- | gine, No. 3, was as follows:

The machine was taken to the reservoir in Dextar Park, and fired from cold water at2p.m. In64 minutes the machine was throwing water through 100 feet of hose. The water was. thrown the following di-- tances: 1g-inch stream, 280 feet; 14-inch stream, 252 feet; 13-inch stream, 250 feet; 1j-inch stream, through 500 feet of hose | 250 feet.
