Celebrates His 80th Birthday

A "T! enloylibic evening was spent at the home of Mr. rd Mrs. Peter Brow. York, on March am when a few of his neighbors were invited to celebrate his blrthdei’ with Mr. Brodie. after a short social chat tables were arranged for games of auction forty-fives and crokhiole. As the night pas- sed theme was a change in the pro- gram. the guests being ushered in- to the dining-room where a bmnt- eous supper was served, banquet style. the table fairly groaning un- der the ‘good things. When even’ one had done Justice to the deli- cacies. Mr. Walton Warren made e very fitting speech attesting to Mr. media's good qualities as a friend and neighbor. Mr. Proud followed with a. few well chosen remarks. The other men praent all spoke highly of Mr. Brodie. For He i8 A Jolly Good Fellow was then sung and Mr. Brodie was asked to give BOme reminiscences of the pest. 80 years. He told some interesting happenings of his early childhood. One outstanding in his memory occurred when as a small boy he was asked to open the gate to the summer residence o.’ Mr. Hayfield Esq. for the caniagc conveying the Fathers of Confederation on a visit. The coachman threw him a piece of silver. the first money he had earned of which he was quite proud.

He told of some of the ancient methods of doing farm work, so different from today. He also touched on the fine community spirit, the people working together and helping each other when nec- essary.

One instance was a follows:-

activities. ‘This was followed by other disorders of such a nature a; to sap gradually the strength of the age-old body, and so leave an easy prey to the final attack of ill- ROSS.

During his long period of semi- bllndness and sickness Mr. MacPhee showed a. rrplendid Cluistian attitude in the resigned spirit with which he accepted his sufferings. Sensing the approach of the end, and, while enduring recurring attacks of pain umnurmurmirlgiy. he quietly pre- pared to meet his Maker. A devout Roman Catholic he was sustained by freuqent visits of his devoted pastor, Pr. MacPherson. The latter it was who administered to him the last rites of his Church. Thus fortified lie met his death in a, be. coming manner.

James MacPhce was born and raised at. Big Pond .In early life he learned Carpentry becoming proficient in this craft. As ship- carpenter he plied his trade at, Souris, P E. I. and Noaiik conri. U. S. A. for many years. A lover of the sea he also engaged in the fishing industry sailing in vessels

from various Island ports m; later life he spent wholly on his farm at Big Pond-

Mr. MacPhee was much liked

and esteemed by all who knew him. A amiable man he was ever glad to welcome his friends at his home where he showed fine hospitality. A good conversatioilalist he could entertain his visitors with many 1n. ierestirig and amusing stories of bygone days. In his rok- of nelgh- hours he proved himself a good citizen .one ready and willing to lend a. helping hand at all times. ‘Mr. MacPhec married Miss Mary c. MacDonald, Morell. P. m. i.
