Extraordinary Liberalism.

In attempting to palliate the ‘blunders and offences of the Local Government, be- fore the indignant people of Princetown, the Hon. Alexander Laird—who is one of the great ‘‘ modern liberals ”—admitted that ‘‘in the matter of education the citizens were also deprived of self-government. They were ruled by a body of men appoint- ed by the Government, whereas country districts elected their own trustees.”

He forget to mention that the citizens are deprived of the ‘ right of self-government ” in the matter of éducation by a Party the Leader of which ‘‘glories in being a Radical !” This deprivation is, however, a finished specimen of modern upas tree radicalism. It is radicalism of the sort which, when the Treasury is low—largely adds to the me expenditure, and plies up the already heavy burden of taxation bourne by the people. It is the self same radicalism that appoints ignorant Assessors to value property by galloping past it, and prohibits, by express legislative enactment, any appeal from their f and unequal appraisemen*:. It is this extraordinary radicalism which has robbed the young men of their constitutional right to the franchise. In short, it is the “‘radical- ism” of Mr. Louis H. Davies.

Indignation Meeting at Princetown

Tue Summerside ‘‘ Progress” contains a long account of the indignation meeting held at Princetown on the evening of the 27th ult. Archibald McGougan, Esq.. was chairman of the meeting, _ James a 88 _. Sec’y. The speakers were Geo. Satins "Esq. Hon. Mr. Laird, Jos. 0. Arsenault, Esq., Wm. Campbell, Esq., W. McN. Simpson, Esq-, J. R. Calhoun, Esq., Finlay McNeill, Esq., John Montgomery, Esq., and Henry McKay, Esq. The follow- ing resolutions were unanimously adopted :

Moved by D. S. McNutt, Esq., and sec- onded by Geo. Sinclair, Esq. :—

Whereas, The tax imposed upon the coun-

people vf this Islan by the Assessment Act, passed the last session of the Legislature, is unjust and oppressive ;

Therefore Resolved, That we unite with other districts to take constitutional means to uave the said Act repealed or so amended as to make it equitable in its opération without ex- emption.

Resolved, That before any direct local taxa- tion is imposed upon the people of this [sland, our Legislators should effect all possible re- trenchment in our machinery of Government and public service.

Resolved, That any tax imposed upon the people of this Island for general purposes and id into the general revenue, should be levied upon the whole people, without any exemption or class legislation.

Whereas The sum of $268,000 cash in the treatury, at the time of union, has mostly been expended in permanent public improvements in and about Charlottetown and Summerside; and

Whereas, The whole people of this Island are paying $166,C90 a year interest for the con- struction of our railway ; and

Whereas, The towns.:and villages of this Island, are far more largely benetitted by the gailroad than other parts of the country ;

Therefore, The Assessment Act exempting those towns and villages from all future taxa- ¢ion and imposing ail the future public burdens upon the farmers of this Island, is an Act of gross injustice and class legislation of the worst kind. ioe

Tue sermon in the morning was preached by the Rev. Mr. Steele, from the words, Faas ny ww nein ‘Sir, we would see Jesus. The evening service was conducted by the pastor, the Rev. John Lathern. A fine sermon was | preached from the text, ‘And lead us not ‘into temptation” : Matt. 6th chap. and part lof “the: 13th verse. The Rev. eentleman said that he had on the previons Sabbath addressed the congregation from the words, \«< Give us this day our daily bread,” and also ‘* Forgive us our trespasses as we for- 'give them that trespass against US 5 beau- tiful and simple petitions which a child with ‘suflicient intelligence to ask for its daily bread could understand, and yet appropri- ate for the most learned and intellectual. The words, ‘* Lead us not into temptation” ‘were most difficult to be understood. The primal acceptation of the word temptation ‘is trial. ‘The great Arabian patriarch Job, ‘had been subjected to the severest trial. ‘Bacon has said ‘‘ that the pensive account ‘of Job’s suffering is more sublime than all ‘that has been written concerning the riches ‘and glory of Solomon.” Abraham was tried even to the extent of laying upon the altar his son, in whom was bound up all his hopes of the fulfilment of God’s promises, and he earned for himself the title of the Father of the Faithful. Jeremiah had wondered why wicked men had been allow- ed to triumph over him, if there was a God in heaven. But God was preparing him to stand before kings. The apostle Paul en- dured severe temptation and prayed that ‘‘'The-thorn in the flesh’ might be remov- ed; but God answered in a way that was

‘‘ His grace was suflicient for him” and the apostle was able to glory in his infirmities. Christ was led up into one of the dreary wildernesses of Palestine. On every hand were -precipitious heights and gorges, and the abode of wild beasts. But the man, Christ Jesus, was proof against temptation. Then the pinnacle was tried, and yet “he was without sin.” Satan had made a mis- take when he quoted the words ‘ He shall give his angels charge over thee.” The as- surance from God is only in the ordin- ary providence of God, and not when men place themselves upon pinnacles from which they are apt to fall. This part of the sermon was full of practical and suggestive thoughts.

BAPTIST CHURCH — GREAT GEORGE STREET.

SUBJECT :—CHRIST’S INTERCESSION FOR HIS PEOPLE.

Text :— Romans, 8: 30 (last clause), ‘Who also maketh intercession for us.” Rev. D. MeDonald, the preacher, briefly referred to the-subjects presented for the past few Sabbaths, in a series of sermons on the sufferings and death of Christ, on His resurrection, His accession, and His return to ‘‘ the glory which He had with the Father before the world was.”

Having, in these subjects sympathized with Him in His sorrow, wept with at His death, rejoiced with Him in His victory,— he invited his hearerers to consider with Him their individual interest in His present work. He then showed that as our High Priest, Christ, had two duties to per- form, viz.—to offer sacritice and to make intercession,—having performed the first, He is now engaged in the second. Christ entered upon this part of His mediatorial office whilst upon earth. In support of this several verses were quoted from the 17th of John, emphasizing the 20th verse ; also, Luke 22: 31—32. God’s chosen to be the subjects of Christ’s intercession, and from this clearly proved their eternal security.

Having dwelt at some length upon the comfort derived from this thought, he pro- ceeded to show the object of Christ’s interces- sion. First, that His people might be pre- served’ from sin (John 17: 15), presenting this as a great impetus to holiness on the part of God’s people ; secondly, that their series and prayers might be acceptable to God, being pexformed with the merit of His atonemene. AS a proof of this, with other passages, he quoted Rev. 8: 34. ‘The third object of Christ’s intercession he showed to be .the eternal happiness of his people. ‘Father I will that they also whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory.” In his sum- ming up he showed the exchange that Christ had made with his people, having gone to represent them in Heaven, He left them to be His-representatives upon earth, ‘< Ag-thou has sent me into the world,” etc. From this he showed that the believer's anxiety should not be as to whether his case es eS is faithfully represented in 1caven, but as

Christ on earth,

In conclusion, he appealed to the un- converted, showing that they could not ef- fectually plead their own cause, nor could their companions in sin plead their cause for them ; and’earnestly invited them to com- mit the keeping of their souls to Christ, and thus secure an interest in an Advocate who never lost.a case, and who ‘‘is able to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make | intercession for them.”

' The preacher announced that on next Lord’s Day evening he wiil commence a series of discourses upon Matt, 16; 18: ‘‘ And I say also unto thee that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church ; and the gates of hell shall not pre- vail against it.”

called away ; and he trusted that those who rémained would so live that when they, too, received a summons to depart they leave the Church militant to join the 'Charch triumphant. | Difficulties would, un- doubtedly, be experienced by earnest fol- lovers of Jesus; but difficulties form and |test the character and fit the true Christian ‘for his blessed and eternal home. The of- 'fertories of the Church were larger and. more regular during the past year than ever before. The heavy debt upon the church at its opening had been materially lessened. A large amount, however, still remained to be paid. ‘This, it is hoped, will be wiped off before the visit of the Bishop next sum- mer, in order that the church may then be consecrated.

A LUNATIC AT LARGE.

He Enters YHe House or Aa CITIZEN AND Puts tHe Lymartes To Fiicut. > A vunatic named Edward Lloyd, on Saturday, entered the house of Mr. Boulton, on the east side of Kent Street. Mr. Boul- ton was away fromhome. After putting the inmates to flight, the lunatic stripped off the larger portion of his clothing, and took a seat before the kitchen fire. He was ar- rested and brought before the Magistrate this (Monday) morning. Lloyd is a person | very crazy, void of clothing, and was, when arrested, in a starving condition. A short time ago the Stipendiary Magistrate applied for his admission to the Asylum. The ap- plication was not granted. A similar appli- cation will now be made, and if again un- heeded, he will have to be let a-large.

To the Editor of the Daily Examiner :

Dear Str,— The Government organs are endeavoring to make their rea evs believe that L. H. Davies was the only lawyer of ability before the Fishery Commission, and that his presence there was necessary. If the success of the British case depended so much on Mr, Davies, how is it that the Halifax and St. John papers are so reticent about Mr. Davies and so outspoken in praise of Mr. Thompson? How came the citizens of Halifax, when they got up a dinner for the St. Jonn tawyer, to forget that such a person existed as the baby Premier of Prince i ward Island?

Mr. Davies, no doubt, did the best he could for the clients that paid him so well; but the work would have been equally well done if undertaken by either Messrs. McLeod, Palmer, Brecken, Hodgson, or Sullivan. The fulsome praise of the organs is evidently intended to tickle the young Premier’s ears, and lead the people to think that they are highly favored in having such a great genius for a Premier, and in order to retain the services of that exalted personage, that they should pay the taxes unjustly levied upon them cheerfully. Bnt the people are be- ginning to find out that having a genius of. the Davies stamp to reign over them is an @x- pensive luxury. Indeed, they would willing- ly exchange their brilliant Premier for any or- dimary mortal possessed of common sense, In fact, their minds are more exercised just now in trying to tind some means to get rid of the blessings of his reign than tney are in con- templating the scope ot his mighty intellect. They would be quite willing to admit that he is unequalled as a lawyer, and that he has all the eloquence of a Curran or a Burke, and the statesmanship of a Gladstone. But they would rather he would go away and be a Premier somewhere else. They look upon his legisla- tion of last Session as something above the comprehension of ordinary mortals, They are even ready to admit that all his relations in office are capital public officials—so far as drawing a salary is concerned. But they think it unfair and ungenerous to less favored communities that we should monopolize the services of so many of them in this Island. Indeed, the love of fair play is so strong m some of the people that they would look upon an exodus of ofticials of the Davies stamp to some less favored land with thankfulness. But the organs will say that the people are igno- rant, and that they have no right to be un- thankful for the blessings conferred upon them by the reign of Davies and his tribe, At some future day I may point out to your readers 'what these vaunted blessings are,
