Atonzo WRIGHT gave a picnic at his Gati- neau residence a few days ago, at which over two thousand people from the country were present. He roasted an ox and six sheep.

Tue petition on behalf of Mr. J. B. Plumb, charging Mr. Hughes, the newly elected member of Niagara, with personal bribery and bribery by agents, was filed the other day.

The ‘‘ Times” correspondent at Constan- tinople is now Mr. McKenzie Wallace, author of the well-known and justly esteem ed work on Russia published with so much success about a year ago.

Mr. Dennis O’Connor,of Perth writes to the Irish Canadian :—‘‘ I am very much pleased that you bore such a noble part in ousting the Grits from their warm quarters. For forty-two years I voted for the Reform party until this year.

Mr. Curnery, the editor of the Ties, says a London correspondent, is away, like a sensible man,oa his holidays. The editor- ship of the journal is, therefore, at present in the hands of Mr. Fred Clifford, a young and very able gentleman, who not very long since was a reporter in the gallery.

Txe shooting match by Captain Long- worth’s Company, for the Company’s Silver Cup, came off at Kensington on Saturday afternoon. Corporal R. Crawford, who held the cup from the last match, won it again. He, however, has to lead the score at an- other match before the valuable prize is awarded. His score was 84 points out of a possible 105.

Mr. Vater, who has been declared elected for Pontnenf on the recount, is to be congratulated. In the Local election he ran in another county, and was beaten by the casting vote of M. Joly’s returning offiver. Inthe Portneuf contest, the re- turning officer had also to decide the result; and, of-course, voted against Mr. Vallee; but the county judge finds he was elected by thirty-three votes. —Muil.

Horse thieves are continuing their dep- redations in the Ottawa Valley. Six fine animals were stolen from J. Kerr, of Bell’s Corners, lately, and have not yet been re- covered. This makes twenty-two animals stolen from farmers in the vicinity of the city within the past two weeks. They are begit.ning to think seriously of forming an association to employ detectives.

McIntyre and Lamb, the parties arrest- ed on suspicion for being implicated in the Baldwin Robbery, were examined before the Stipendiary Magistrate this forenoon. Lamb produced witnesses to prove that he slept at home during the night of the rob- bery, and he was discharged. McIntyre stated that he was not at home on the night in question, but slept with a servant,whose name he refused to give, on the ground that if the servant’s master discovered that he would harbor outsiders, he would discharge him, and (McIntyre) did not want any- one discharged for harboring him.

Ture Temp2rance Lecture in the Ath- enzum last night by Mrs. Youmans was excellent. Her style of oratory is some- what different to that which we have been | accustomed. Her words are the spontaneous | o itburst of a true and earnest woman’s heart. Her allusions are pathetic, pointed and eloquent. During the course of her lecture

A VatvaBLe ANntMAL.—Professor Law- son’s yearling prize bull, raised at Lucyfield farm, and shown at the Provincial Exhibi tion at Truro, has been sold to Union Corn- wallis Society for $500. This is the largest price ever paid for an animal in Nova Scotia.

THERE was an interesting ceremony at St. Pauls Church this forenoon. Our genial friend, Mr. R. B. Stewart, jr., was wedded to one of city’s fairest daugh- ters—Miss Anna Warburton. The Church was, on the occasion, crowded with friends and well-wishers of the happy couple, who assembled to wish them a pleasant journey through life, as we do now.

A CALCULATION has just been published by the Russian War Department of the ex- penditure of ammunition in the late war with Turkey. The artillery, it is stated, fired in all 204,923 shot and shell, while the infantry and cavalry expended no fewer than 10,057,764 cartridges. The artillery numbered 1,268 field guns and 150 heavy ordnance of the siege train. The number of rifles and carbines employed was 325,- 098.

Mourper oF A CLERGYMAN IN FRANCE. — The Abbe Leraidde, residing at Ardon, near Lyons, was murdered on a recent Sunday morning as he was going to the village of Luilly to say mass. He was found on the roadside with his head split open. A little girl saw the murderer, whom she did not know, but was able to give a description of him. The priest was 65 years of age, and universally esteemed.

A NUMBER of young citizens assembled on Pownal street, at a late hour on Saturday evening, and organized a riot on a small scale. After ‘‘ making the night hideous” in that vicinity they retired to the Engine House on Jail Square, where the fighting qualities of two of the *‘ most riotous” were tested in good style. The police have se- cured the names of the leaders, and the matter will be decided by the Magistrate to- morrow morning.

Tnrecharge preferred by watchman Cusack, in the Examiner of Saturday evening, against the officers in charge of the Police Station on the night of the Baldwin rob- bery, viz: Warren and Merchant, was in- vestigated by the Stipendiary Magistrate this forenoon. The watchman was not pre- sent at the investigation to repeat the charge, and we are given to understand that the manner in which the watchman inform- ed the Police of what occurred at Messrs. Baldwin & Co’s store, was not such as would lead them to believe that anything serious was taking place. More light is re- quested.

Tue Atheneum was crowded last night to hear the great temperance lecturess— Mrs. Yeomans. I[t being announced in Saturday’s issue that the meeting would take place in the Market Hall, a large num- ber congregated at the doors at 8 o'clock, but was informed that the order had been cancelled. This is to be regretted, as the Athenzeum was far too small to accomodate those anxious to hear this renowned speaker. A correspondent, writing on this matter, says :—‘‘ It is a mistaken idea of economy in the managers of the Reform Club in this city to suppose that the small outlay necessary to procure the largest hall, is more than an equivalent for the good which would, no doubt, be effected. It is, we very much fear a ‘‘ Penny-wise and pound foolish policy,” which cannot but be detrimental to the interests of temperance in our midst. It is currently reported that the managers of the Club have been even raean enough to charge Mrs. Yeomans fcr the use of the Hall. We hope the reportis unfounded.

The opening of the new winning at ‘‘ THE SYDNEY MINES” and the fact that the SYDNEY COAL now being shipped is all from the DEEP taken in connection with re cent improvements in the process of screening, affords purchasers a positive guarantee of the very superior quality and condition of the SYDNEY COAL now offered for sale.

It is a well-know fact that for many years past the prices of other Cape Breton coals have been regulated by the rates fixed for SY DNEY COAL; but while itis true that other coals, to get a sale at all, have been pressed on the market at various prices under the current rate of SYDNEY COAL, it is no less true that, taking into account the superior lasting qualities of SYDNEY COAL when pd am with other Cape Breton coals, the advantage, both as to economy and convenience, is in favor of SYDNEY COAL, even at a much higher price.

The General Mining Association (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to buy in- ferior coals purporting to be ‘EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” “SUPERIOR TO SYDNEY,” etc., ete., while some yet more unscrupulous venders have not hesitated to advertise their

coalas SYDNEY COAL (from some designated locality). All these efforts to sell coal by such

means are only so many admissions on the part of t'.ose who make them of the stanparpD character of SYDNEY COAL.

It has come to the knowledge of the Asso- ciation that in frequent instances parties giving orders to truackmen and others tor SYDNEY COAL have been furnished with other and inferior coal. ‘The Public are cautioned against permitting themselves to be imposed apon in this way.

Every vessel loaded at THE SYDNEY MILNES is furnished witha certificate of the cargo being Sydney Coal. Parties purchasing should satisfy themselves by demanding the production of this certificate.

The ‘‘ Sydney Coal” is registered under the laws of the Dominion, and unauthorized parties using the Trade Mark “*SYDNEY COAL” are hable to prosecution.
