Tue nave and chancel of St. Peter’s Church have recently been greatly im- proved. Inside the church will, when completed, be one of the most beautiful in the Lower Provinces. We have not space to-day for a full description of the work re- cently done.

Mr. R. Harris has prepared and for- warded two oil-paintings for exhibition in Toronto. They are decidedly the best we have seen from his hand, and we venture te predict that they will do much to raise the status of the Island in the estimation of persons of taste who may see them. They are entitled, respectively, ‘‘ The Newsboy,” making the most of his opportunities, and ** Day Dreams.”

ParPrarations for Mr. James Gordon Ben. nett’s Arctic expedition are so far compk t:d that the yacht ‘‘Jennette” will sail from San Francisco by June 1. Mr. Bennett pro- vides the vessel and everything necessary ex cept the crew, which is selected from the U. 8S. Navy, and will be paid by the Government, and be under control of the Navy Department. Mr. Bennett goes as far as Alaska with the expedition. Supplies will be taken for a three years’ cruise, and every effort will be made to discover the North Pole, or anything else that has not yet been discovered.

On Saturday nig’it, during the progress of the fire, several robberies were com- mitted and attempted in different parts of the city. Just as the alarm of fire sounded, a sneak thief entered the front door of Mr. Robert Scott’s residence, on Euston street, and took therefrom two valuable overcoats, two felt hats and afar cap. The residence of Mr. F. Haszard and the residences of other gentlemeu at the North End were also entered, but the thieves were dis- turbed before they secured any booty. No arrests have yet been made.

On Friday night it was discovered that some time lately Messrs. Fenton T. Newbery & Co's bonded warehouse on Peake’s No. 2 wharf, had been broken open and a quantity of tobacco stolen. ‘The thieves effected an entrance by forcing open a_ window in the rear of the warehouse that had been boarded up. OnSaturday portion of the stolen prop- erty was Susie” hid on Queen’s Wharf. Yesterday Officer Cameron. discovered a cad- die of the stolen tobacco at at Mrs. Cum- mings’, King Street. Mrs. Cummings said her son found it on Peake’s Wharf while there getting firewood, There is still a larce quantity of the tobacco missing. Tue amount stolen is valued at $129.

YEsrerDaAY at noon, a warse and child of Hon. W. W. Sullivan met with an accident by which both had a miraculous e-cape from death. The nurse--a girl about fourteen years of age—with one of Hon. Mr. Sullivan’s youngest childrenin her arms—ascended the tup of a draw-well to see if any of the house hold were returning from the city. While standing on the top, a plank gave way, and both were precipitated into the well, a dis tance of thirty-six feet. The accident was no- ticed by a servant, who ran immediately to the well with no other expectation than to take two lifeless bodies therefrom. On arriving at the top the servant was rejoiced to tined both living—the nurse standing in the well with her arms uplifted holding the child from the cold water. A rope was hastil lowered. She tied it around the child's body, and it was safely hoisted to the top, little shaken by the great fall. A ladder was next lowered. It was rather short. On ascending to the top of the ladder a rope was lowered, and the heroic young girl climbed hand-over-hand on the rope to the top. The back of her head was badly fractured from
