She leaves to mourn five sisters. The funeral took place Wednesday morning at 9,o'clock from Comp- ton's Funeral Parlors, Summer- side to St. Paul's Church Rev. Eugene Murray celebrated the Requiem Mass. The service at the grave ‘was conducted by Rev. Monsignor G. J. McLellan. The pail bearers were, Messrs. Albon Arsenauit. Pnince County lost an estimable citizen through the death on No- vember 30. of James A. nix of Mim- inegash 1011091111. an accident on Wednesday, November 20, which resulted in a fractured hip and head injuries. Born seventy-three years ago the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rix (nee Mary Pickering) the latc genfleman was a ‘ ‘- ant of one of the earliest settlers in Prince County. He was essen- tially the good citizen type unde- monstratlve but always a quiet and persistent worker for the better- ment 6i the community. l-le had the reputation oi always being wil- ling to help a neighbor and for sin- cere hospitality. He successfully farmed the land left him by his father and also engaged in fox ranching.

He was charitable. kindly and enjoyed the company of ifs neigh- bors. He served from time to time as a school trustee. was greatly in- teresfed in political questions and the sport activities in hockey and other games. of the young men of the community.

His wife predeceased him four years ago._1oft to mourn are three sons Austin. Alberton; William in Charlottetown: Burton at home: and four daughters, Mrs. F. H. Whippen, Dorchesten Mass. The certificate signed or endor- sed by an official veterinarian of the country of origin showing that the animals are free from the dis- ease and have been subjected to a test within 60 days oi tile-date of exportation showing negative rc- suits of the disease.

Judging was carried on this morning. the judges being G. Ennis Smith, Superintendent of the Experimetal Fox Ranch at Summerside, P. E. I., and Dr. John Jack, aslstant superintendent at the same establishment. Ranches in Fredericton and vicinity were the chief winers although branches in other parts of New Brunswick also shared in the prize money. Some sixty fox pelts were enter. ed in the competition and attend- ance was representative. “We are aslklng for a restoration of the equilibrium set up by the Maritime Freight Rates Act under which we got a reduction of 20 per- cent of the eastern lines’ proportion of the through rate." said Col. Ral- ston.

MANY FACTORS INVOLVED

The Maritime counsel referred to arguments advanced by the railways that shipments of potatoes from the Maritimes had increased even after Ontario rates were reduced. He did not think this had been advanced very seriously. Many other foctors entered into this question of ship- ments besides transportation rates. There was the factor of crop condi- tlons in Ontario and the Maritimes; there was the factor of demand; there was the factor of general ec- onomic conditions

The issue before the Board in- volved interpretation of the Mari- time Freight Raies Act. Col. Ralston argued. Could the railways put in- to eflect reduced competitive rates in Ontario without also making ef- fective proportionate reductions on eastern lines as provided by the Maritime Heights Act. ~

The contention oi railway counsel that the Maritime Rates Act mere- ly provided a reduction of 20 per- cent from rates prevailing in the Maritime Provinces before its pas- sing, was contested by Col. Ralston. That, he declared, was not the in- tention nor purpose of the Act. The purpose behind the Act was to give the Maritime Provinces a chance at Ontario and Quebec markets. ‘The new potfito rates put into eflect des- troyed the parity established by the Act. Potatoes, covered by the ap- plication, were far from being the only commodities affected. The competition principle of the Mari- time Ilreight Rates Act held been violated on many other commodi- ties. Whiia the present application concerned only potatoes, Col. Ral- ston said the Maritlmes reserved all rights to take up rates on other coml" adities such as lumber, biscuits and ianfectionery, iron and steel and hides.
