The planting in the spring should be as early as possible, but late enough to escape late spring frosts. We must not forget also that corn likes warm growing weather. Plant in rows 34 feet apart, runuing north and south, and give thorough cultivation. as the growth is grea'ly dependeut on the cultivation.

This is a most popular subject at the In- stitute meetings in Ontario, but the ques- | tion now is not, ** Is the nilo a success?” but ** How can we improveit?” It is a success, and a most decided one. It is past tthe experimental stage, and has reached an

age when it can speak for itself. Those who build silos now have not to do do in such

The complaints we | hear male against the silo come from those who have never had a silo; for those who have had a successful silo have nothing but | Praise for it. Some may have not been successful, but they see their mistakes and ' can reetify them another year. As to the complaint of ensilage causing the cattle to _scour, @ batter Ladialedes of the subject feos * more mature corn has made it a {thing of the past. Many still claim it will ‘taint the milk, but in every charge of this kind investigated it has been fuund to be due to carelessness iu handling the milk, either in allowing it to cool in an atmos- phere saturated with the odor of ensilage or in a foul ill-ventilated stable and the odor developed through the cow. Gvod sweet ensilage will make good sweet milk, if fed to healthy cows in a properly ventil- ated stable. We all know there is nothing like grass to give a cow a good flow of milk; in fact that for miik production we must have a succulent feed. Ensilage comes the nearesd to this of any feed we can find, ana when the cows are fed it we find the butter ‘comes’ easily, just as it does when the cows are on grass; and there is no more trouble about hard churnings as when the cows were fed on rationa of hay and meal. There 1s nothing like good ensilage for a liberal flow of milk during the winter. It has always been recognized as essen- tially a milk producing food; and to many it comes almust as a surprise that it could be good for anything else. But some ex- periments lately have shown it to bsa splendid beef-producing foud also, Two years ago this winter, Prof. Shaw, of the Guelph Oollege, sterted an experiment to test the ensilage as a beef-producing food. Twelve steers were chosen for this purpose and divided into three lots. To one lot was fed 12 lbs. mixed mval and all the en- silage they would eat. To another 12 lbs. of mixed meal and a certain amount cf hay, andto the third lot the same as the last with roots in addition. The meal was the same in each case, the difference in the feeds being in the ensilage, hay and roots They were fed two months on that feed; then they were changed, so that each lot had a different feed to what they had be- fore; after two months feeding on this they were changed again. The result of the feeding was that each lot had two months feeding on each of the different feeds. Due precautions were observed as to weighing the animals before and after each trial, and of weighing all feed which was fed, and any the animal did not eat. The result of the experiment was that each lot of steers made the best gain on the en- silage. Though not much ahead of the cther feeds, yet that it did as well is a fact of great importance. The same expsri- | ment was tried again last winter with a ‘ diffsrent lot of animals; again the ensilage | ration came out slightly the best. The ex. ‘periment is being repeated again this win- ter. But the fact of great imp rtance to us is that the ensilage ration cust only about one-half that of the other rations. In these times of close competition, this means that we will he able to produce beef at a cheaper rate, and our profis lie in cheapening the cost of production. Asafood for growing animals it has no equal ; so we might claim it as an all round food. In fact, many claim it as an excellent food for horses, cows, sheep, pigs and poul- try,—but if it answers our purpose as an excellent feed for the growth of cattle for milk and beef production, we should be satisfied.

POSSIBILITIES OF ENSILAGE.

The winter feeding of ensilage has been so successful, and the cost so little, that it is soon going to take the plice of a soiling crop in the summer to supplement dry pas- tures. Enough can be put in in the year before to have some left over in the spring for this purpose—and it will keepin the

The great objeetion to the wooden silvs is that they rot so quickly, but intoo many cases the sills of the silo have been placed below ground and no ventilation provided. In sueh a case the wood will rot out in about three to five years. The sill should be placed at least a foot above the outside ground, and 6to8 inchesabovethe bottom of the silo inside, and an opening should be made at the bottom of the silo between the studs for ventilation and similar ones at the top thue allowing free access of air. A silo built this way should last for fifteen years.

In regard to the form of # silo, it may be oblong or rectangular, square or reund. An oblong silo has the most side wall for its capa- city ; atquare silo of the same capacity will have less side wail, against which ensilage mav be spoiled ; in a round one the side wall is less still for the same capacity. The rect sngular and square silos are very apt to spoil in the corners, while a round silo has no corners to epvil. Again, a rectangular or square silo has to be built very strong to stand lateral pressure—2x10 ioch stude have to be used, and if a high silo every thing has to be bound together very securely at the corners, making it rather expensive. In a round eilo each board running round the silo acts like a hoop bind ing it together; only 2x4 studding need be ueed, and # round silo will cost oaly one-half that of a square or oblong eilo for the sam- capaci y

The depth of a silo is an {mportant point. | It should be at least 15 feet—better to be 24) feet, and may be even as high as 36 feet. ‘he increased depth will help it to keep better; it will also help to press down the ensilige, and thus more will be held in a given space. A silo sh nid be increased in depth rather than sidewise, and sheuld never be too large onthe ground. Never build a smal! silo jus to try to see how it will do—it will bea failure every time, because the essentials of success are wanting. Goin for a large one or none at all; if you build it right, and fill it properly you cannot but come out with a nice article.

Corn is not the only thing that can be saved in the silo; clover, timothy, oats, and vetchea, peas, &c., can all be saved with good success Mr. Wm. Miller, of Marsh- field, filed his silo this year with oats and vetches. They saved nicely, and made a lot of fine ensilage, which he found to be a splendid milk producing food. Good corn ensilage hae no bad flavor.

If winter dairying is to be adopted by the farmers of this Island, some means must be provided of supplying an abundance of suc. culent feed. e silo offers the best means of doing thie, »e turnips though « succulent feed yet impart a taste to the milk which cannot be wholly eradicated, and would be decidedly objectionable in an article for export.

Pror. Harcourt said that the land should be moderately rich aad warm. Corn will not grow in cold weether. Huot weather is best for it.

Cmartes Dicxiason asked what affect the growth of corn has upon svil ?

Pror Hancover—It is not half so ex- hausting as wheat. It takes less ash con- stituent, weight for weight. But it needs good manuring. The best land to put it in is a clover sod.

Wituam McN. Simpson said that as more than one witness was required by the scriptural lawgiver, so he would like to see the success of corm growing in this Pro- vince established by the evidence of more than one person. We need more heat for success in corn growing. But vetches and turnips are easily grown here, and should not be discarded.

Mr. Dowacp Srupson said there was risk of nut growing the crop at all in some sea- sons. He desired to know the relative value as feed of ensilage and turnips.
