Deadline Approaching for R.C. Bayley New

Music Competition

The March 31st deadline is fast approaching for submissions to the Fredericton Music So- ciety’s 1995 Robert Charlton (Robin) Bayley Competition in Music Composition. All com- posers who were born in or are now residents of New Brunswick are encouraged to get their submissions to the Fredericton Music Society as soon as possible.

Awards of $500, $250, and $150 will be given to the top three solo or ensemble compo- sitions of an instrumental, vocal or choral nature. Awards of $150, $100 and $50 will also be given to entrants who are no more than 18 years of age as of the competition deadline. In addition, every effort will be made to have the winning compositions performed at the FMS Gala Concert in November 1995. The judges for the 1995 competition, an independ- ent panel engaged by the Fredericton Music Society, will soon be confirmed, and all sub- missions will be judged anonymously. Prize winners will be announced in June of this year.

All entrants must be. native New Brunswickers or current residents of New Brunswick. Submissions must be new works which have not previously been published or submitted for competition, and may take the form of an instrumental or vocal solo of a work for an instrumental, vocal or choral ensemble. Entrants may submit mor than one work eae cycles or works in several sections wi Ibe considered as one work), but the $10 entry fee must accompany each submission. The per- formance time for submissions should be be- tween 5 and 12 minutes.

Allentries, in score form and accompa- nied by a $10 entry fee, must be received by March 31, 1995. A cassette recording of the submission is also recommended. To add to the atmosphere of goodwill and friendship, balloons will be placed in several buildings around campus, which hope- fully will remind us to reach out to others ina pleasant way.To make this occasion come alive and be more meaningful, we offer the following suggestions:

Musidcal Performance

Valdy, fresh from playing a major folk festival in Australia, is touring the Maritimes. His performance a the Carrefour Theatre in Hillsborough Park on Friday, March 31, will provide fans with the opportunity to hear live the songs from his new album Heart at Work, as well as the classics from the past 30 years.

Valdy hit the single artist scene in 1971 with the recording of the single ‘Play Me a Rock & Roll song’’ which remains his signa- ture song. The career that began with a rock and roll song has earned Valdy 4Gold Albums, 7 Juno nominations, 2 Juno Awards, 4000 concerts and 12 albums selling 400,000 cop- ies.

Valdy is our home-grown version of the Boss, his textured voice, dynamic stage pres- ence, inimitable style, and wide selection of unique material make him a unique Canadian who has gained recognition around the world. The work on his latest release Heart at Work was reviewed previously in the X-Press. Roadrunner Hostelling Treks are pack- aged tours without the ‘‘package feel”’. They offer the security of a guide; convenient mini- van transportation, flexibility in choosing ac- tivities and the informality of small groups of 12-18. Their 1995/96 brochure includes tours in Britain, Europe, Japan, South Africa, Canada and the United States. There is no age limit on Roadrunner treks, but most passengers are between 18 and 35. The aim is to create a young, ‘‘go-for-it’’ attitude among the group.

The Roman Roads tour starts in Lon- don, England and visits major sights in 14 countries throughout Europe. Accommoda- tion is mainly in Hostelling International hos- tels and includes a castle in the Alps and a Florentine villa, as well as modern city centre facilities. The program includes city tours in London, Paris, Montreaux, Grenoble, Nice, Florence, Rome, Venice, Innsbruck, Buda- pest, Vienna, Prague, Munich, and Amster- dam; Rhine cruise through the Lorelei Valley; and visits to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and a Burgundian vineyard.

If you think poor communication between students and the Student Union is a problem, you now have an oppurtunity to do something about it. Acommittee will be meeting a couple times over the next few weeks to examine various problems in areas such as communica- tion, lobbying, and representation. The com- mittee will develop recommendations on how the Student Union might solve some of these problems. Whether you have ideas or not, if you are interested in a constructive attempt to find solutions call Rory O’Connor (and leave a message at 566-0417), or leave your name with Betty at the Student Union (566-0530). This will not require a large amount of time, so don’t worry about your papers and exams. And heck, you just might help improve things for next year.

Theatre Production

Theatre Prince Edward Island will present David Mamet’s controversial play, Oleanna, at the UPEI Duffy Amphitheatre, Tuesday March 28 through Friday March 31, 1995, curtain time 8 pm. The production is directed by Ron Irving, and stars well-known Island actors Rob MacLean and Nancy McLure.

Oleanna is a challenging play about sexual harassment and political correctness, set on a university campus. Audiences will argue about it, and be glad they went.

Magna For Canada Scholarship Fund
