Reavtar convocation of ‘‘Port la Joie Encampment” will be held at Oddfellows Hall, to-morrow (Wednesday) evening, at half-past eight o’clock. Business: Con- ferring the Patriarch’s Degree.
On Wednesday evening, at 7.30, a meet- ing will be held in St. James’ Church, at which .ddresses will be delivered by Rev. D. “McRae and other strangers. At the close a collection will be taken in aid of the poor.
A COUNTRYMAN named Smith fellin a fit at the ‘‘ Commercial House” corner this forenoon. He lay insensible on the side- walk ‘nearly a half hour before he re- vived, during which time he struggle hard, and blood flowed from his ears and nose.
Tue Fortieth Annual Report of the Prince Edward Island Auxiliary Bible Society, with a list of subscribers and ben- efactors, is at hand. The total circulation of Bibles and Testaments during the past year was 1,516, showing an increase of 3135 copies over the sales of the previous year.
Ar the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon Daniel Ryan, drunk and a vagrant, was sentenced to three months’ im- prisonment with hard labor. Francis Dogherty, for the same offence, was also sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Patrick Kavanagh, drunk and using profane language, was also sen- tenced to a like term of imprisonment. Martin Purcell, drunk and incapable, was fined $1 and costs or four days. Edward Butler was sentenced to two months for vagrancy. Oliver Dointon, drunk and dis- orderly, was fined $2 and costs or eight days.
Mr. Dante, Gorvon, Park Keeper, of this city, lost a valuable horse at Kensing- ton, on Saturday evening. An employee of Mr. Gordon was gathering sea weed along the marsh when the two fore feet of the animal sank into the mud. He worked considerable while in the hole, and when the employee succeeded in recovering him from his position he discovered that one of his fore legs was broken. The horse lay on the spot which hé fell until the following morning, when the employee caused his departure from this life by cutting the unfortunate animal’s throat with a butcher
knife.
A FARMER named Patrick McQuaid, who resides at Lot 30, attempted suicide on Sunday morning by cutting his throat with an axe. At1o’clock on Sunday morning he got out of bed, said he wanted to shave, and asked fora razor. His wife suspecting something to be wrong, arose by way of assisting to search for the razor, and, find - ing it before her husband, she hid it. Not finding the razor he returned to his bed. Arrising again at the asual hour, he went immediately to the yard, and, seizing an axe, he cut his throat almost from ear to ear. Little hopes are entertained of his
recovery.
THREE notorious young vagrants, named Kavanagh, Dogherty and Ryan, were yes- terday arrested by the police, and arraigned before the Stipendiary Magistrate this fore- noon. None of the three are over seven- teen years of age. They reside at the southwest side of the City and are a con- tinued disturbance in the parts they fre- quent. Liquor drinking, street rambling, and mischief is their daily avocation, while at night they sleep out-doors — generally in some filthy stable. When arrested the first-named was very drunk, and made use of the choicest profane epithets in his voca- bulary ; the next named was drunk and seconding jthe efforts of Kavanagh, while the third attentively listened. They were each deservedly sentenced to three months imprisonment, with hard labor.

Mr. Eprror,—l am going to give an expla- nation, through your paper, regarding the treatment of employees iy the blacksmith de- partment of our P. E. I. Railroad, under the great Grit Government and Grit bosses. | will begin by asking a question. What was the reason so many of Sir John A. McDonald’s supporters were «discharged from the black- smith department, and helpers put to work at their forges’ Because there was a Grit boss. Does not the foreman of the blacksmith de- partment or the Mechanical Superintendent know helpers at work from blacksmiths? 1 say if they do not, they are not fit men to hold the positions they do. Mr. Editor, 1 think by discharging men that have done good work—men that have saved the Grit Govern- ment 75 per cent. by their work—men that have worked on railroad works in this country and in England for the last thirty years—Il say that, by discharging these men, the fore- man of the blacksmith department and the Mechanical Superintendent show that they do not know a good man froma bad one. 1 will challenge any man in the blacksmith depart- ment to show a recommendation to prove that ever they worked one day in a locomotive shop or railroad workshop before they were set to work here. These are the class of men who are-running about looking for friends and telling intelligent men in Charlottetown that they are Pope and Brecken’s supporters, and always were. I think that little game is played out for another five years. If they were Pope and Brecken men, the great Grit, David Lalrd, would not take the trouble to bring them down to the Mechanical Superin- tendent, and tell him *‘he was bound to find room for them, whether they could do the work or not.”
We want a chance very badly to get rid of such Pope and Brecken men as I have men tioned and to discharge the helpers who are taking the Government’s money for learning their trade, and return the three men that were discharged by the Grit boss of that de- partment.
Mr. Editor, I will state one circumstance that I have heard from men that are working on the railroad to-day. The foreman of the blacksmith shop condemned one ot the most useful articles in the shop—the steam ham- mer. I am told it was lying rusting in the de- partment for two years and never did two hours’ work till aman by the name of William Morgai came on to work in the shop. I was in the railroad ‘blacksmith shop when he was making pins for coupling cars. I asked him who ana that tube? ‘I did.” How many coupling pins can you make in a day ?’ He told me he could make from nine to ten dozen per day and point one hundred in an hour. Before that man came to this Island it took two men ten hours to make three dozen. Now, is that the class of men we want on the railroad or do we want helpers? I sup- pose any one will do as long as he is a Grit party man. I hope I will see the three men again that were discharged for upholding the rights of their party. I can safely say they are better men than were kept on in that de- yartment under the great Grit boss of the
lacksmith department. The three men i will mention are Thorne, Russell and Morgan.

Srr,—The Patriot would now, since the de- feat of the Grit Government, have it be- lieved that the sole issue was the trade ques- tion, viz:—Protection or Free Trade. ‘That the victory is, in a great measure, due to this, cannot for a moment be denied. But it was not the only issue before the people. Has not the Patriot and the whole Grit press kept it before the people that if they would vote for any of the candidates supporting Sir John A. McDonald, that by doing so they would de- clare their belief in the honest course he took in reference to the Pacific Railway, and in his statesmanship and ability as a ruler of this great Dominion? And on the other hand did not the Patriot keep it constantly before the people that Mr. McKenzie was the only per- son who had the ability and honesty to carry onthe Government of the Dominion in the future for the benefit of the people, and always pointed to the Pacific Scandal to condemn Sir John ; and if he (Sir John) would be returned to power that the verdict passed on him by the McKenzie party would be reversed. Could an issue be more plainly defined than this, and it was the issue which the Pa‘riot kept most prominently before the electors. It affected to treat Free Trade and Protection as a farce— a good joke, which the Liberal-Conservatives devised to amuse the electors. Therefore, according to the Patriot, the grand issue before the people, was the Pa- cific Scandal. The Conservatives did not

ALL the Estate, Right, Title and Inter est of the said Catherine Roper and James Roper, or of either of them, in and to all that tract, piece or parcel of land situate, lying and being on Lot Phirty-three, in Queen’s County, in Prince Edward Island, bounded as follows, that is to say: On the south by the Royalty Road ; on the west by the farm hereinafter described, in possession of James Roper; on the north by land in possession of William Gill; on the east by land in possession of Patrick Berrigan, and containing Fifty-one Acres and Two Roods of Land, a little more or less, the said described land being the eastern moiety or half part of a certain tract of land, comprising an area of one hundred and three acres, demised by John Hodges Winsloe to Benjamin Roper by an indenture of lease, bearing date the first day of May, A. D. 1832, the division line between the moities of the said tract of land running northwardly and southwardly, and lying in midway between the east and west boundary lines of the said land so demised.
