Sir,—The veriest stranger, in passing! through our streets at the present time, | would see that eomething unusual had! startled our pesple cat of their wonted! uietude. Upon every countenance there! rests an enxious expression. Friends scan the faces of friends, therein to find some assurances of comfort or sympathy ; whilst even those who formerly knew each other} by mere sight or heresay, now approach| and find relief in unburdening their feel- ings in respect to the appalling visitation | which has come upon us. Mothers aro} seen hurrying with their little ones, and | streng men, who could unflinching)y face | an armed force, are following, to seek the | one preventitive against the common foe— vaccination. We earnestly hope that the value of vac- eination may not, in the present instance, have been discovered too late ; and that, along with the prompt measures taken by the Health Officer and assistants, the loath- s me visitant may yet be expelled. Half a century ago, many a deeply pitted face might be seen in Great Britain; now, owing to the universal custom of vaccinat ing in childhood, or rather during infancy, there are few signs of the once prevalent scourge to be seen. Some, in this city, are persistently unbelieving as to the value of vaccination. For their benefit I may be allowed to cite the case of a village in Scot- land, possessing, at the period of which I write, a population of over 3,000 souls. Smalipox, then sweeping, over Europa, reached it, but, though the maledy made its appearances in several! families, only two individuals succumbed te it, and these had not been “Vaccinated. It is there regarded as highly important that the virus be procured from a healthy child. (Here I may be permitted to sugwest that the code published in regard to vaccination, in this day’s Examiner, as well as cure for smallpox, etc., ought to be carefully re- tained in “every household.) The sincere thanks of the whole country are due§to Dr. Jenkins, who, doubtiess, in sounding the alarm, has saved many valuable lives, and we have also to be grateful for the prompt and energetic measures taken by the same same gentleman in conjunction with Mr, Dodd and others,in securing « sui'able hospital for the afflicted, I+ is pleasing to know that all petty distinctions of party, etc., were entirely sunk in the enthtsiasin, ith which our respected citizens labored for the common weal, exemplifying that though heads may widely differ, hearts may be one—one in the great humanizing bond of ‘sympathy. We observe that Rev. Mr. O’ Meara purposes, at great risk, to minister to the spirttual wante of the suffererz; and that the Sisters of Merey, whose services | have heard most reverently extolled by the long suffeiing in the whitewashed wails of a Calcutta hospital, have volunteered their assistance.
