Two of Charlottetown’: young caretakers have had an interesting experience since last Old Home Week-Jackie Sheri-en made the trip to Foxboro with Len O'- MeanJs stable and since then with his chum Jackie Quinn, has been up to Dufferin Park. Toronto. The latter joined up with Frankie Carr in taking care of Lock Hanover in his racing through Maine after Goodwin Meet here. Both boys found iihe cold weather and other conditions not too comfortable at the Ontario track and were glad to get back to Spud island for the winter. The experience they have gained in moving around will be very valuable and of benefit to whoever employs thorn next season IS caretakers.

A group, consisting of Harry Hirsch, PJ. Cadegan and other prominent horsemen have made an offer to lease the Cape Breton Sports Centre. race track and grounds, Sydney. N.S. for one year, with the privilege of renewal. They plan Io fit it with electric lights for night racing and are confident it would be a success. It cost over $100,000 to build the plant a few years ago and it is one of the finest in the Maritimes.

In the lull that followed the long range bombardment I watched a single black try to sneak past the Kid from behind and saw him cut her down. A fcw minutes later a big black cnme down the lake high and travelling fast. She had just run the gauntlet of fire from the guns at the west end. It. was n. long shot but offered a clear cut target. The Winchester spoke once, twine and she went into a tailspin, right- ed herself, and with wings set glided swiftly downward. She smacked into the water in front of the old time gunners where she sat in a dazed. manner within easy range.

I heard three shots ring out in quick succession and watched the pattern made by the lea/den pellets streak past their target. With an effort She managed to get into the air and fluttered weakly past the shooters to the accompaniment of more shots and dropped in the bushes a few yards behind them.

I was glad Someone got this bird. I had no water dog and my chances of retrieving her were slim unless the Kid could have nailed her be- fore shc reached the weed fringe. At this point I was caught nap- ping and didn't see the big black that came in at tree top level till It. flared upward within 10 yards range. I hnd a glimpse of silver lined wings and long snaky neck above a broad beamed breast as she climbed swiftly skyward. This

I saw over the sights of the Win- chester as 1 lined them up for an easy one so I thought. A bird in the hand is worth two in the air anytime. I registered two clean misses.

After this I moved further ncrtii and teamed up with a young gun- ner who was shooting a big 10 gauge that slapped his hand across the bridge of his nose everytime he fired it but he was game to keep at it although a. welt was begin- ning to show. I figured him out as having the makings of a good sport in the shooting game. 1 point- ed to a black duck lying in the weeds a few feet in front of him: "Is that yours." "No" he replied, "someone else shot that duck and it drifted over . I have one ashore a. little piece further up".

I was to learn that this was not the attitude of quite a few gunners at the liike on this opening mom- ing .. it didn't pay to leave ducks lying where they drifted ashore. I! one did they weren't there too long not if a certain class of gunner happened along. I wasn't long in finding this out. I missed a Pintali that offered g nice shot and A moment later doubled up a black duck that. came in fairly high. The water spurted near the north side as it struck. A couple of minutes later another single back cut across my front. The left barrel charge connected fairly and she. collapsed in midair. The momentum of her flight carried her across the corner of the lake where she hit a tree and dropped at the water edge. I carried neither of those ducks home... someone else got hands on them first.

By this time the flight had about pctered out and my chance of getting a mate for the duck I hnd in hand looked slim. I noticed that the odd single was dropping in over the NorEast corner. It wits worth a chalice and I moved into position. The Southport farmer totes an Ithlce also had the same ldde and we mflde a team. It seem- ed like old times. We've watched many dawns break in each others company'on duck marshes. lakes and beaver dams over a long period of years.

He also had one black duck. lie said to mo: “ I shot one of the biggest blacks I ever saw early this morning. It drifted across to this end and someone else picked it up. "We were so busy talking about old shoots that we didn't see the black that came within range till it flurried off to our left. The Ithica and Winchester barked in unison, feathers sifted into the air and a long neck map- ped back between her wings.... she punched a. neat hole in the moss a few feet short of the water.

10 minutes inter we were on the alert and spotted the next single coming. as the ‘farmer remarked: "Right into our mitts" again the Winchester and Ithlca. sang a. little tune like they used to sing in the old Fraser's Beaver Dam days. The black duck dropped at our feet ns llm-p as a dish rag. We each had our pair and felt. satisfied even ii.’ no more targets. came our way,

A few minutes later I glanced behind and nudged my partner. A

going to a fire. It was a half mile to where we were stationed but they made it in record time. They offered no apology but fell in like troops on their markers. One almost brushed shoulders with me and the other two lined up on the left of my partner. We were boxed in so tight we had barely room to breathe let alone swing a. shotgun.

They weren't a bit backward about coming forward. Both of us had been in situation like this be- fore. The first duck down someone who couldn't shoot his way out of a toy balloon would be the first. to shout: “That's my duck". There was just one thing to do and we did it..... quietly picked up our ducks and left.

As I walked to where the Kid

was stationed I glanced back...

two blacks were headed straight for the muzzles of their guns. There was a ragged volley of shots and the ducks zoomed in a back flip and headed hack the way they had come. The transition from West End to East End had not improved their shooting. r chuckled quietly to myself.

In all the years that I have shot I fall to recollect a more glaring breach of rules governing sports- manship. I decided that possibly I was too generous with my English in referring to them as West End-

icn. and mentally deleted the word

west’ and substituted therefore a four letter word ‘rear’

One has to take the bitter with the sweet in the shooting game with a tendency to remember the sweet, Thus I have relegated this duck shoot to the list of unfor- gettable opening mornings. I had seen lots of ducks of diflerent kinds and listened to the rumble of gunfire as it re-echoed aglnst the wall of spruce. I hud missed some- eusy shots and made some heart warming ones but above all I had spent hours hunting on ground hallowed by past memories. The Kid and I each had a pair of blacks when we pulled out shortly before 10.00 A. M. l

I ‘would have liked to have spent the day at the home lake and re- lived past hunts of boyhood days and felt the presence of old hunt- ing companions long since gone the way of all flesh, but 1 had more pressing matters to attend to. At days end, as the curtain of night fell. George and I dropped in oh the fire works at Pisq-uid Pond .. but that's another story.
