Our shore mackerel fleet continue to land large quantities of mackerel and, as they all come of small size, prices are lower, trade being well stocked on them. They are selling mixed at $3.50 to $4.50 per bar- rel. Large mackerel are mach wanted at #8 to $10.50 per barrel.

| The Queen’s Estate.

‘HER IMMENSE FORTUNE AND WHAT SHE MAY

London Truth, referring to the announce- ment made that the Queen is about to 'make a new will, says:—‘‘Her Majesty possesses an immense fortune. The estate of Osborne is at least five times as valuable as it was when it was purchased by the Queen and Prince Albert about forty years ago. The Balmoral property Majesty now extends over 30,000 acres, Claremont was granted to the Queen for life in 1866, with reversion to the country; and Her Majesty purchased the prop-

‘erty outright three years ago for £78,000. Probably its market value is not much under £150,000. The

Queen also possesses some property at Coburg, and the Princess Hohenlohe left her the Villa Hohenlohe at Baden, one of the best residences in the place. With regard to personal property Mr. Nield left the Queen over £500,000, and the property left by the Prince Consort is believed to have amounted to nearly £600,000; but the provisions of his will have been kept a strict secret, and the document has never been proved. The Queen must also have saved a vast sum out of her income, which has always been very well managed. Since the death of the Prince Consort the general administration of the Queen’s private affairs has been confided to Lord Sydney, who is a consummate man of business.

‘‘T have reason to believe that in due course, application will be made to Parlia- ment on behalf of the children of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Indeed, there is to be a royal message on the subject of Prince Albert Victor's establshment next session. The country will not, however, be asked to provide for the younger members of the royal family. The Dake and Duchess of Edinburgh are already wealthy, aud on the death of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, they will migrate to Germany; but the Connaughts, Albanys, Christians and Bat- tenburgs will look to the Queen for provis- ions, and so also willany of the younger children af Princess Alice, who may happen to make poor matches. It will be seen, therefore, that the Queen will have plenty to do with her fortune, large as it undoubt- edly is, and although in the event of Her Majesty’s death the country would be asked to provide for Princess Beatrice, yet she would naturally oceupy an import- ant place in her mother’s wiil.

“Mistral's” Sanative Mifect.

The ‘‘mistral,” a strong and dry northerly wind, is again blowing at Marseilles, as a cable message informs us, and the health of the city is said to be consequently im- proving. At all other times than during a cholera epidemic the mistral is in bad repute, and according to an old Provence rhyme is one of the three plagues of the country. The fluctuation in the death rate on the Mediterranean coast now during the prevalence of the mistral shews that it is a sanative agent, not less propitious than the ‘‘Favonian breeze’ so often lauded for its similar virtues by the classic poets. One excellency of the mistral at this juncture is that, while in several respects disagree- able, its temperature is quite regular and free from sudden changes. Next to the bad effects in the cholera epidemics of in- tense heat combined with great humidity and sultriness, excessive range of tempera- ture in short periods must be most depre- cated ; but this happily is not one of the attendants of the mistral.

The mistral winds have set in at Mar- seilles, and are having a good effect on the health of the people, though in other parts of France the cholera seems to spread.

The Bible Christian Church authorities in England have accepted the proposals of the branch in Canada regarding the funds of the society in regard to the Methodist Union scheme.

Three deaths of a remarkable character, have occurred near St Petersburg. They were caused by blood poisoning induced by the stings of flies which had been in contact with cattle infected with the rindepest.

Foreigners are looked upon with much suspicion in beautiful Leipsic. As an example of the ofticiousness of the police, it is related that an American student at the conservatoire was lately arrested for ‘stealing wood,’ and was condemned to twenty-four hours’ imprisonment and pay- ment of all expenses. He had, in reality, picked a small sprig of lilac, weighing about one-quarter of an ounce, from a tree which overhung the street.

Great fears are entertained that the hack matack trees will finally succumb to the attack of the industrious saw-fly, which has been at work for several years. This year they have been more destructive than ever, the trees having been entirely bereft of foliage in July. A new growth is now appearing on the limbs, only to furnish succulent food for the second crop of larve which will make its appearance shortly. — Bangor Commercial.

Princess Louise left Engiand on Saturday to spend the autumn in G.rmany. Lord Lorne is yachting with his father and mother in the Hebrides, It is reported he will succeed his brother, Lord Campbell, in Argyleshire at the next election to the House of Commons as the liberal candidate. His book, Canadian Pictures, by pen and pencil, is just issued, and lavishes praise upon the Dominion. He waxes enthusi- astic over her democratic institutions.

July 28 wasthe anniversary of the de- plorable misfortune which befell the Island of Ischia last year. It had been resolved to celebrate it with religious ceremonies, and four steamers laden with the friends of the victims went over from the mainland on asad pilgrimage. Four aliars of wood draped with black were erected, and two bishops celebrated « pontificial mass for the repose of the souls of the dead. At the cemetery, which was visited by a large crowd, a priest delivered a touching ad- dress, in which he alluded to many of the incidents of the terrible catastrophe.

The great Duke of Wellington was most punctilious in all matters of etiquette, and his son once aroused his ire, by neglecting to show him the courtesy he demanded of others. When the late Duke was stationed at Dover with his regiment, all the officers left cards upon the hero of Waterloo, with the exception of hisownson. At a great dinner given at the Walmer Castle, the young man was not invited. Asking the reason of his father for this, the lron Duke replied: —‘‘These gentlemen did me _ the honor to call on me, and I have returned their civility. You did not call.” It will be well for young America to pluck a moral from this and avcid the growing tendency to be less respectful and deferential to parents than they are to strangers.

An important and sensational trial has just been concluded, after occapying sev- eral days, at Carlsruhe, in Baden. The accused was a money lender named Hus- mann, who had a terrible reputation for usurious practices and cruelty toward those who were in his power. There were sev- enty witnesses who testified to his illegal extortions of money, and almost all of them were debtors who had been gradually stripped of all their possessions by Haus- mann. The public prosecutor, in his address to the jury, said that the prisoner had been a curse to the country and had been shown to be w thout a trace of human- ity. Hausmann was found guilty and was sentenced to pay a fine of 8,000 marks, and to be imprisoned for six years and to be deprived of civil rights for five years there- after.

“Qnce upon atime,” began the teacher, ‘two brothers started to a Sunday School on a Sabbath morning. Their way led past a fine peach orchard, where the trees were hanging wilh ripe, luscious peaches. One of the boys proposed going into the orchard aud getting some of the fruit, but the other refused and sped away, leaving his com- p2nion greedily devouring the peaches. Now it happened that the owner of the orchard saw them, and the next day re- warded the good boy who refused to steal his peaches by giving him fifty cents. He got a prize for his honesty, and what do you snppose the other boy got for his dis- honesty?” ‘He got the peaches!” yelled every member of the class, and another penitentiary story was brought toa close. — Atlanta Constitution.
