The Minister of Customs dressed down'Sir Richard Cartwright, as also did the Hon. C. H. Tupper, contrasting the expendi- tures of the Customs and Marine Depart- ments during Cartwright’s administration as compared with those of the present ad- ministration.

Hon. Mr. Tupper has given notice of a resolution that it is expedient to make an annual grant of one hundred and sixty} thousand dollars to aid the development of the seal fisheries, and for the encourage- ment of the building and fitting up of im- proved fishing vessels and improvements for the benetit of Canada.

St. Jonn’s, Nfid., May 27.

In the Newfoundland House of Assembly last night, in the division on motion to extend the terms of the Local Coercion Act until the end of 1893, the members of the Government party voted with the Opposition. The session was held with closed doors. The Imperial Government bas made a private propesal to the Newfoundland delegates which will obviate the passage of the Lord Knutsford Bill. The delegates are now con- sidering the propes:1.

Despatches trom Lanislone say that an alarming epidemic of la grippe is sweeping over that part of Newfoundland. Hundreds are afflicted. The doctors cannot attend all the victims and some of the doctors are them- selves very sick. The mortality at Benaring and Fortune Bay is really terrible.
