KEEP THOSE DOORS CLOSED!

THE FIRE in the service tunnels sent a toxic smoke through most of the build- ings on campus causing most of them to be evacuated. However, according to Ron Kennedy of the Charlotte- town Fire Marshal’s office, it need not have happened.

Kennedy said that if fire doors in most buildings had been kept closed, the smoke would not have made such quick progress.

“If the fire doors had been shut during that lit- tle incident they had we wouldn’t have had the dam- age we had with smoke nor such a possibility of people losing their lives,” he said.

Provincial regulations state that all fire doors in all buildings on cam- pus must be kept closed at all times. These doors slow the flow of smoke throughout a building allowing more time

for people to escape during a

fire.

However, besides imped- ing the flow of smoke, fire doors also impede the flow of traffic. For many years, fire doors at UPEI have been blocked open by faculty and staff in the various buildings annoyed by having to con- stantly open them. After the fire reminded them why the doors were installed in the first place, the UPEI main- tenance department removed many of the blocks holding

Now, however, doors are being wedged open again. In Kelley Building, for example, two blue doors sealing the hallway between the book-

fice are again blocked open, two weeks after fire caused the building to be evacuated.

At the utility building, orders are beginning to ap- pear on requisition forms for commercial door wedges.
