Some seventy men, headed by Sheriff Hill, of Antigonish, on Monday searched the Island in Tracadie harbor, on which young Bowie, who fatally shot farmer McDonald last week, was supposed to be concealed, but failed to find him. The Island, which is about 600 acres in extent, is so densely wooded that a man would find it very easy to conceal him- seif there.

Struck Dear sy Ligutstnc—The Moncton Times says: —During the thunder storm on ‘Tuesday evening last a span of grey horses, the property of Cyrus Reterson, of Gibson, York Co., N. B., were struck deaf by the lightning. The horses were in a barn which the lightning struck, and running down one of the posts, tore off some splinters, but otherwise did noinjury to the building. Mr. Peterson was surpnsed next morning to find his horses would not mind his bidding, and at length discovered they were deaf, when he at once inferred the cause. The animals show no other signs of injary, and perform their work just the same as previous to the accident.

To pay our attention was called by Mr. E, W. Taylor to a note which purported to be a $5.00 bill of the Union Bank of P. E. L., but which was in reality a patchwork of three different notes, viz: two fives and a one dollar bill. it being almost impossible at first glance to detec y fraud about it. THE ever welcome Guy Family brought a rain storm with them this time, There was net so much thunder as usual, but it rained hard; not so very, very hard, but jast hard enough to prevent the crowd rushing in and bulging the hallas they generally do. The hall was well filled, however, for it takes something stronger than a rain storm to pre- vent the Guy’s from getting a good house wherever they go. The show was excellent, everything being entirely new, except the per- formers. — Mountaineer, Gorham, N. H

Tue Scorrish Garnertne.—The grounds known as Longworth’s field, selected by the Caledonian Club for some years past for their Gathering, presents a lively appearance. Con- tractor McGregor and his men are erecting a grand stand, capable of comfortably seating about 2,000 people. Refreshment Saloons, dancing booths, band stand, swings, ticket (flices, ring for competitors, and other en. closures are under contract, and rapidly approaching completion. The special trains on the morning of the Gathering, next Thursday, will stop at the St. Peters Road crossing, close by the field, thus enabling pas- sengers, (through the kindness of Supt. Coleman) to stop at the field, where ample provision will be made for the comfort and amusement of the thousands who doubtless will honor the day by their presence at this great annual gathering.

A Suggestion.
Srx,—l noticed in your paper a few days ayo an account of an heroic deed performed by James Frederick Curtis, Chief Landing Waiter and Surveyor of H. M. Customs, in rescuing from drowning in Lord’s dock a small boy who would no doubt have been lost had it not been for the timely arrival of Mr. Curtis. Deeds of this kind are gener- ally awarded by the Dominion Government by the presenting of some useful article— say for instance a watch or spy-glass.
1 would suggest that some representation be made on behalf of our hero, and I have no doubt the Government of which he is an eflicient oilicer would come down hand- somely.

A Serious Accident.
An accident of a very serious character oceurred shortly before noon on Wednes- day, in the clothing manufactory of Messrs. Sanford, Vail & Co., of Hamilton, Ontario. Preparatory to going to dinner, a Mrs. James Smith, forewoman of the mantle manufacturing department had occasion to go into the wash-room, through which passes an iron shaft for running the mach- inery. She had beautiful flowing hair, which unfortunately in her movements, swung against the revolving shaft and be- came wrapt around it, drawing her head against the shaft and the wall, tearing the whole scalp therefrom and leaving only a small tuft of hair at the top of her forehead. The scone was dreadful to look upon, while blood besprinkled the floor. Drs. Leslie and Hillier were soon on the spot and gave medical attendance, bandag- ing her head, during which time Mrs. Smith never spoke or uttered a complaint, and was only affected when her two little children approached her. Shortly after the accident she was removed in a cab to her home on Catherine street, near Cherry. This evening she was as well as could be expected, and it is believed that her life is not endangered.

The steamer ‘‘Paltian,” with Kavanagh, Hanlon, Smith, and other informers were refused permission to land at Melbourne, and «have arrived here. The informers have, by order of the Home Government, been transferred to the British ironclad ‘‘ Nelson.”

The Grand Lodge of Oddfellows met again this morning at 9 o’clock. The Past Grand Master, Woodhouse, of Vermont, was introduced. In pursuance of a notice of motion, Dr. Campbell, London, submitted a resolution striking off superfluous titles such as ‘Most Worthy,’ and “Right Worthy.”
The Operators’ Strike.
New York, Aug. 10. The Western Union Telegraph Company reported this morning no wire cutting last night, and business is being handled promptly. They say there is no truth in the statement that the Company is losing $50,000 a day in consequence of the strike. They are not losing anything, and the
receipts are very little below the average.
