It was a. long and trying seas-all for the reinsmen competing over tracks in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, P. E. I., and ln addition to’ afternoon racing many of them participated in night rac- lng. Our list might be enlarged in take in quite a number of other drivers whose feats of reinsman ship deserve added plaudits to those which the spectators gave them. Among them we notice new names that in the near future will be much further up on the ladder of fume.

To all these drivers we extend our hearty congratulations. For thorn it has been a most active season, also for their owners, care- takers and the horses they raced. The many thousands of fans who watchedltheir efforts to pilot their horses to victory enjoyed-m large amount of excitement and thrills which they recognized by their un- stinted applause.

Released by the United States '1‘rotting Association early in De- cember was the surprising and (al- together unexpected announce- ment that Joe O'Brien had topped all drivers in the domain of the U.S.T.A. in Canada and the Un- ited States during the 1947 season. Joe wound up with 128 victories, piling up his winning margin over

his opponents during n. pheno- menal streak at the late season night racing meet at Foxbnrc,

Mass. where he was also the lead- 111g driver. Levi garner of Blooms- burg, Pa, was runner up with 115 heats or dashes to his credit.

Joe's driving was so spectacular that the man acclaimed the world's greatest and most success- ful reinsmun, Scptimus Palin, who races Castieton Farm stable, Lex- ington, *Ky., offered him the r9 sponsibie position of second train- er and driver for the million d01- iar harness horse outfit. Joe sc- cepted and is now superlntending the training of the stable st Del mar, California. in preparation for the opening harness horse meets at Hollywood and Santa Anitg the latter being famous for the $50,000 pacing and 950.000 Rotting stakes staged there. We are sure all Msritllnm will follow his career in the United States with interest and the hope that he will have every success.

The highest priced was Brewer's Gallon, a two-year-old stallion that B. C. Cruickshanks, Halifax, paid $4,500 for. Billy Hood secured the yearling Jackson Dale by Worthy Boy 2.02 1-2, and Bill Stewart bought Prodigal Vic 2, 2.05 3-4 which he sold afterwards to P. J. Cadegan, Glace Bay. Bill also brought back from Hanover Shoe Farms the weanling filly Annabelle Brooklyn by Billy Dir- ect 1.55, dam, Belle of Brooklyn 2.12. Jimmie Power, Charlottetown, was the high bidder on the ciassv chestnut mare Tennesee Sue 2.06 3-4_ a 2.18 class pacer. and Bob Brown, bought Indiana Boy 2.05 1-2 which he sold on arrival home at Woodstock to William Coker.
