The late Miss MacDonald was born at Lakeville, P.E.I. 82 years ago. In her early life aha went to the U.S.A. and for many years was employed with the firm of R. H. White and. Co.. Boston. Mass. Falling health made it necessary for her to retire to her Island home and she spent the remain- ing years with her brother. Col- umba MacDonald, Lakevllle, and with her sister. Mrs. Eugene Fay. East Baltic. When they passed a- way in 1943. she lived with her nephew, John B. Fay, and later with her niece, Mrs. MacAulay. who so tenderly cared for her in her last illness and with such un- selfish devotion. leaving nothing undone that might in any way allay the sufferings of her "dear Iunt Sadie."

The late Miss MacDonald pos- scssed rare intellect: she was an ardent reader, a lover of poetry and could quote fluently from the rlasslcs. But only the few, who knew her. were acquainted with these traits as she was one of those reticent, humble souls who never Inughf. the praise and acclaim of lhrue around her "Her voice was nor gcntle. sweet and law." JOSEPII GILLII

The sudden death of Joseph Gil- lls on June 14. was a severe shock to his immediate family and num- erous friends in St. Peters and vicinity. He had been ill only one week and always was of a strong and robust constitution, his con- dltlon was not considered serious until his removal to the hospital where every medical aid was giv- en. but of no avail. His family were summoned and all were pres- ent at his bedside. when fully forti- fied by the last rites of Holy Mother Church, he quietly passed away in his 15th year.

Born at St. Peters he spent most of his life there, except for a few years in the U. S. and the north- ern provinces of Canada. He, was a man of a quiet disposition and a good neighbour. He had no enemies but many friends. His fun- eral took place from the Hennessey

The 375 clergymen and laymen who represented the church's ll conferences on the general council met in the big white frame Sack- ville United Church with the Uni- tarian theme of the August World Council of Churches, "Christ, the hope of the world," preoccupylng them day'after day.

Dr. George Dorey of Toronto. the Channel Islander and onetime Methodist who was elevated to the moderatorship at the opening meet- ing Sept. 15, defined the feeling as "a spirit of unity" which he said must be encompassing or "all chcrches of the Christian religion" would fail.

TALKS ON UNION

The subject of union closer to home came up with the report of the commission that has been holding periodic talks with the Church of England toward an eventual organic merger. The re- port said the talks had bogged down partly because the mass of the people in each communion had yet to face "frankly the adjust- ments and modifications” nec- essary for each ”and the policy to achieve it.”

However, the council endorsed a proposal that the talks be con- tinued.

The morning session Friday, the last for this first general council in the Maritimes, split sharply on a series of resolutions which sug- gested that capital punishment should be retained but restricted in application.

The United Church of Canada SACKVILLE. N. B. (CP)-We have dealt with certain matters such as the reorganization of de- partments. the appointment of new secretaries, religious education in the public schools and changes in

our pension fund.

But the thing that impressed me most. about the council was the spirit of fellowship during these past 10 days that the commis- sloners were able to enioy-

But all these are a means to an end. The end for all the council is to proclaim the great message and that is the one brought forth by the World Council of Churches:

"Jesus Christ, the hope of the world."

We have asked the commis- sioners to go back to their com- munitcs to make the words and the phrase not an empty sound like the echo of a drum but the ex- presslan of a dynamic faith that will give power in their individual lives, in the social life of their communitigs and in the national

e. The United Church has reaf- firmed its desire to do the utmost it can to achieve in Canada the unity of the Christian churches.

I would like to say once again what I have said before and what I said before this council opened: without a spirit that leads to unity, the church will surely fail and by that I mean all churches of our Christian religion.

The 10 days saw the church re- affirm its long - standing and blanket opposition to drinking, gambling and Sunday sports. The latter brought it into conflict with Ontario's Lord's Day Act of 1950 which permits for instance, base- ball un Sunday. As a corollary, the council urged the CBC to call a halt to telecastlng Ottawa, Mont- real and Toronto Sunday football games. -

The conference hiked the min- imum annual salary for ministers from 32,700 to 32,800 effective next year and pledged itself toward a minimum of 33.000 as quickly as possible. Car allowances were also raised.

Other benefits were created when the delegates approved a radically different pension plan which will make pension payments directly proportionate to salary in- stead of uniform, regardless of the contributions over a minister's pe- riod of active service.

CONTROVERSIAL BOOKLET

One of the most controversial is- sues arising from the entire con- ference was created by a booklet that purported to define the dif- ferences in the Protestant and Roman Catholic faiths. The book- let, prepared by a special council- appolnted commission, was critic- ized as an attack on the Roman church alth cu gh delegates in- sisted that was not the purpose be- hind its creation.

Perhaps one of the most signif- icant reports tabled originated with the committee on civil relig- ious liberty which reported that "for the most part" Roman Cath- ollcs and Protestants. French and English-speaking Canadians now enjoy "friendly and tolerant rela- tionships" in Quebec province-

Cash sales slipped by 17,400,000 to 82,l28,100,000 from 32.135.500.000. Far sharper was the 829.000.000 drop in instalment sales to 8370: 300,000 from s4oo,soo.ooo and the 316,000,000 drop in charge-account sales to 5583.B00.000 from 3590.000.- 000.
