It was quite correct to lead the diamond Jack from dummy, to cnnx lﬁast to cnvcr il he could, but when the diamond queen did not Bppcar, South should have gone right in with the ace and then laid down. the diamond king. This would constitute a safety play-it would at least ix:- sure that West could not get in with the singleton or doubleton queen at diamonds. (Ll West had three or more diamonds to the queen, there was nothing South could do about it.) South did not have to worry about East. getting in with the diamond queen. since that defender could not sot up any problem in the spade suit.

First there had been Bugicr alone. When he had seen the wonder and ad- mlratloii in their eyes he had done a lot o! showing olf and boasting. He had made it very plain that he thought. well of himself, very yvcll indeed. He was proud of his size, proud oi his great antlers, proud of his strength, and he wanted all who saw him to know it. His voice, sounding much like the notes oi a bugle, and carrying far, had dared any one within hearing to light him. It had brought. another Elk. He was even n. little bigger than Bugler, just as handsome and just as willing to fight, perhaps a little more willing.

"What are they ﬁghting about?" asked Mrs. Musky.

Musky shook his head. "Doxft ask mo,‘ srtld he. "I don't see any- thing to fight about, Perhaps they just don't like each other."

He was right about that. They didn't like each other. For one thing, they were jealous cl each other. Each wanted to think that he was the biggest and strongest and hnndsnmest and most to be admired, and wanted others to think so too, But he couldn't be sure until he proved it. Jealousy is like that. Little by little Bugler was forced back across the opening among the trees. The other, being a little bigger, was a little heavier. That made a. difference.

“He boasted too Musky.

"It serves him right," said Musky.

'I‘hcn Musky became angry. sir. he became quite angry. you see whnt they are doing!" he cried. "They are spoiling our tun- nels! We'll have all that work to do over again!"
