There are, however, as we are informed, reliable nurseries in QOaotario whose stock eoai- pares favorably with that of some of the best nurserymen of the United States. The nurseries referred to have been in- spected by officers of the Ontario Govern- meut, and have been pronounced free from disease. Everyone will, we thiok, admit that the disease ought not to be ad- mitted ; and we shouldbe among tbe first to find fault with the Government if it were to neglect precautions against the introduction of the San

PEACE PROJECT DOOMED.

Action of the Powers Iudicates Its Ignominious Failure

The annofimcement that Sir Henry Howard, the Briti¢h Minister tothe Court of the Netherlande, is to act as the princi- pal representative of his couatry at the forthcoming peace conference, to take place at the Hague next moath, may be said to indicate that the pet project of tbe Czar is doomed to ignomipious failurs, for, in appointing Sir Henry, Fagland is following the example of all the-other great powers, which beginning with Ger- many, have decided to send no special delegates to the peace or disarmament congress atthe Hague, but merely te be represented by their regular envoys at the Dutch Court. Thus the German delegate will be Minister Von der Bricken, while the Muscovite representative will be Baron Struve, long envoy of the Czarat Wash-~ ington.

The fact that no special delegates should be appointed, and thatthe great powers should be coatent to be represented at the conference by the diplomais eof minor importance who actas their envoys at the Hagur, shows conelusively how little attentioa wr consideration they accord io the congress, which would undoubtedly have been abandoned long ago were it not fora desire to rpare the feelings of the young Czar. But the failure of the congress is already assured by the statue of ihe delegates by whom the various powers will be represente!.

Some Questions and Replies.

At all the meetings held by Professors Robertson and Macoun last week ques- tions were asked and replies given. We append a list of the more important ;

Question.—Can black knot be cured?

Avswer.—Bilack knot can be cured by cutting off the limb or part affected as soon as the knot appears, and burning the diseased portion.

Question.—Row can the black spot in apples be avoided ?

Answer.—By the use of the Bordesux mixture, viz , 4 pounds of lime, 4 pounds of bluestone and 40 gallons of water. This is fouad effective if applied by epraying just before the leaves come out in the spring, before the blossoms open, after they have fallen, and two or three times afverwards.

Question.—How can a tree which has been planted many years without result be made to fruit?

Answer.—If it bas been in good condition, and appears to be thrifty, and is ao eerly bearing variety naturally, by root

pruning. Prune away seme of the roote. It must however be remembered that some varieties

of apples are long in fruiting. For in- stance, it takes the Northern Spr from ten to fifteen years to bear. A _ person having Northern Spy appletrees must only live ia hope, (Laughter. )

(Question —~lIe there a preventive for rust in wheat ?

Answer—It is impossible to prevent rust in certain seasons. Rick land and strong growth induce rust, Don’t fertilize your grain crops too much.

(Juestion—How can the bark-louse be removed ?

Anewer—About the latter part of May. in Ontario—here it may be Jater—the eggs are batched and the little insects run about on the face of the tree. That is the time Use

Answer—Tie best time to prune is Apri! | or the early part of May. In Ontario many orshardists prune in winter when thev have leisure.

Question—- Does it pay to feed pigs with raw potatoes?

Auswer—It never pays to feed on raw potatoes; but it does pay to feed boiled potatoes with cracked grain

Question— Does Paris green affect the growth of potatoes?

Answer—The potatoes take in moihing but etarch through the leaves. The application of Paris green does not affect the growth.

Question—Are agricultural exhbibitioos advisable f

Anawer—(Profeasor Rebertson) A wel! mapaged agricultural exhibitien may be of great service tothe farmers and others in the community It provides ol-.ject- lessons of the best which the farmers of the Province have produced in crops, (grains fruite etc.) livestock end manu- factured articles. Seeing these, the farmers are encovraged and stimulated to try to do aswell in products as anything the

ex’ -bitors show. The educational value is quick and farsreaching. Young men and women receive information which makes them enthusiastic in carrying on their own work, Exhibitions give ijlus- trations of the resources of the Province to sirangers. These are ameng its best advertisements. The Iadustrial Exhibi- tion at Toronto is @ means of bringing peo~ ple and capital into the province. Anything which helps to make the cli- mate and crop growing conditions of the province known will attract visitors to it.

These spend money and become a gocd market. Exhibitions sfford a holiday time for the country people. They should be saved from too much side-show attrac: tions; but enough of these to give pleasing entertainment are of benefit. The judi- cious combination of amusement and instruction at holiday times are necessary to make exhibitions a success, “ I think every provisce ehould have at least one well-managed agricultural and industrial exhibition, every year if practicable, if not then oneevery second or third year.
