Exercises in the Opera House Last Evening.
Distribution of Medals and Diplomas— Interesting Addresses.

Thecommencement exercises of the Prince of Wales College took place in the Upera House last evening. The spacious edifice
was well filled with ladies and gentlemen on the interesting occasion, aud among those present were many who claim Oid Prince of Wales as their Alma Mater.
Hon. Donaid Farqubarsenu presided, and with him on the stage were Judge Fitz- gerald, A. B. Warburton, M. L. A., and Dr. Anderson. In the rear of these were the studeuts and the Professors who are associated with Dr. Anderson on the teach- ing staff.
After some introductory remarks by Dr. Anderson, the College #lee Club came forward and rendered a chorus ina very creditable manuer. ’
Then came the essays by Mr. Cyrus MecMiilan, and Miss Nellie Hodgson. “Oliver Goldsmith” was the sulj-ct of Mr. McMillan’s essay, whieh was somewhat lengthy. In view ofthis fact only that po: tion of it relating to Goldsmith’s birth, scheul days aud earlier siruggies for fame and fortune was dealt with. The essay L was well written and was read in good voice. That portion of it with which the audience was favured was very interesting indeed. Miss Nellie Hodgson’s eesay which followed, was another clever cor position. It was entitled “The Abencerage.” The matter was most interesting, and it was read ip a manner that was decidedly pleasing. Both addresses were deservedly applauded by the students and audience,
TheGlee Club then favored the audience with another chorus, after which. Mr. Willis, the valedictorian, came forward. In his imeresting paper Mr, Willis reterred to the many pleasant reflections that must centre areund the events of the past year. But pleasure is reldom unalluyed with pain, and during the year a student who had endeared himself tu all ‘went out in an untimely death,” causing a pang of sadness and regret to fill the hearts of his College compan oas. Ail things considerei he claimed that never before in the nistory of the College had the same amount of work been done as was performed last year. Much of this success was due to the teaching staff who displayed even more than their usual skill in developiug the raw material entrusted to their care. The pleasure of having Professor Robertson at work again was keenly appreciated. Appropriate references were alsu made to the debating club and College Observer, and the College successes at hockey and football were also dealt with. In closing Mr. Willis spoke of the aew College build— ing, and gave Hon. Mr. Pevers credit for the action he had taken im the matier. Before concluding he said a few words regarding the parting of the students, and expressed the hope that no matier where their lot would be cast they would do | all in their power to keep ineullied the fame of Old Priuce of Wales.
At the conclusion of th? valedictorv, and befure Mr. Willis left the stage, the Coile ge Glee Club esng “Auld Lang Syne.”
Dr. Anderson, in reply to the valedic- tory, spoke in the highest terms of the work dove by the studeats during the year, and expressed his appreciation of the splendid mauner in which they had re~ sponded to the wishes of tue teaching staff. The diplomas, he pointed out, had not been obtained without much hard work, and the students who received them were fully dererving. Theee diplomas were treated with the greatest respect wherever presented, and to usea finaucial expression they would be taken at “their face” avy- where. He sincerely hoped that no matter where the students wonld locate or what avocation they might pursue, they would always endeavour to. keep unsullied the fame of Prince of Wales Col- lege; that they would never do anything }. that would be calculated to bring the’r blush of shame to the cheek of any person connected with that institution. Success has always attended Prince of Wales
students in other seats of !earaing,and this
year they have even been more successful than usual. Not only has the class work
ene of there stndents been good but their con-
duct was excellent. He strongly urged
those of the students who would engage in
teaching to be thorough and diligent in: their work, pointing out that it was largely
through the painstaking efforts of the
teacher that many a lad was sent to the
College. Dr. Andersen then put in an able
plea tor higber education. Denmark, which was Once the poorest country of its
size in Kurope, was now one of the richest,
and all on account of the intellectual de- velopment of its people. To higher edu-
cation in schools and colleges wasatiributed
the success of that couutry in dairying,
bacon—curing and other industries. Why
should not Prince Edward Islaod succeed in these matters as well as Denmark? What higher education had done for Denmark it
would surely do tor this province. Higher
education would cultivate the minds of the people and put them on the road to success. In conclusion he urged the students to work bard and honestly and success
would assuredly attend their efforts.
“Three times three and a tger” were then given for Dr. Anderson, afier which came another chorus by the Glee Ciub.
The presentation of medals and diplomas then took place, tbe honors being handed the succersful stadenta by Hon. Mr. Farquharson, who brietly addressed each. The names ot the prige-wivners and the medals won were given in yesterday’s issue.
As each student came forward to receive biser her honor, witty sailies and impro- vised sungs greeted them from one of the boxes where the Glee Club had taken upa position.
Before the presentation began Dr. Anderson read a letter from Dr. McPha), of Montreal, who had promised a medal each yearto the best studeut. In this letter the desire was expressed that th:s medal should be known as the “Anderson Medal” in recognition of the valuable services rendered the cause of education by the talented Principal of Prince of Wales College. Hence this medal will in future be known as the Anderson Medal.

Vice-Chancellor Fitzgerald then briefly addressed the students im the absence of Mc. Arthur Peters. He referred in open- ing to the waluable services rendered the cause of education by the brilliant Principal of Prince of Wales College. He thought it was eminently fitting that the medal presented by Dr. McPhail shoul be given the name of Anderson. Dr. Anderson bad helped to form the character aud mould the destiny of baodreds of our most successful people, and it was right that this should be recognized. He referr- ed to the proposed new College, and ex- pressed the opinion that if the new boys
ia the néw building upheld the status of the old boys in the old building they would be doing well.
Another chorus followed.
Hon. Mr. Farquharson then mide a brief address. He congratulated tire College and us teaching staff upon the spleadid showing that had been made, La the matter of education he thought that Prioce Edward Island compared very favorably with aby omer province, It was, he said, the ambition of the Goveru- meut to give every boy and girl a good education, and almost half tbe revenue of the province went for this pur- pose. He urged the students wheo they entered upon the battle of life to always do what was rigbt and bonor- abic. There was a great deal besides ¢duca- tion in the battle ot life. He would advise tbe young men to keep out of ‘towns unless they had to come in. He also ad— vised the boys to take up mechanical pur- suits in preference to the professions which were overcrowded, and in conclusion paid a deserved tribute to the services rendered the couutry in educational matiers by Dr Anderson.
Cheers were then yiven for the Vice- Chancellor and Hon. Mr. Farquharson; and the Glee Club rendered Scuneider’s Band.
Before dispersing Dr. Anderson tendered ihe thanks ot all concerned to Mr. Hedley McKinnon, who presided at the piano, aud to whose painstakivg ¢fforts dur'ng~ the past three weeks the success of the musical partion of the proceedivgs was due.
Cheers for Mr. McKionon and the National Anthem brought the proceedings toaclose. The entertainment was very enjoyable throughbou', and the large eudi- ence seemed wel! pleased
