Corporal Roy Stunden ef the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Irwin Christian Fellowship Group last night. Taking as his subject high- way safety. the corporal impres- sed his hearers with a most in- structive talk on this important matter.

"Three important things enter into highway safety" said Cor- poral Stunden. "They are engine- erlng. education and prosecution." He went on to say that it is the duty of public minded citizens to see -that roads are kept in the best possible condition with pro- per markings. etc. Education. be said was important and it should be the duty of every adult to be I good example to the coming generation. He stressed the im- portance of traffic education a-I mong highschool students and strongly endorsed the idea of est- ablishing a driving school where youth could be taught to drive properly.

One of the plants they visited killed and eviacerated 5.000 chlckg ens an hour or 40.000 chickens a day. Plant officials controlled the entire operation supplying the farmers with the chickens and then buying the chickens back whenever they were required.

Y.M.C.A. Sec'y Addresses Club

Mr. E. Arnold Ward. Y. M. C. A. National Council secretary for young adult work. was guest speaker at the regular weekly meeting of the Alpha Y's men's Club held in the banquet room of the Y. M. C. A. last night.

The chairman of the meeting was W. P. MacLeod. chairman of the Young Adult Committee of the Alpha Club. The meeting open- ed with the singing of Y's Men's Ode followed by grace by Club President, W. E. Carson. The sing-song was led by Loren Mac- Lellau with 0. K. Preshy at the piano.

Gordon Maxwell, General Sec- retary of the Charlottetown Y. M. C. A., in introducing the guest speaker referred to Mr Ward's long and varied back ground in Y. M. C. A. work in the field of Young Adult Group Work.

Jack Sutherland. one of the new members of the Alpha Y's Men's Club. extended the thanks of the Y's Men to Mr. Ward for his very helpful and instruc- tive address.

The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

Music Festival Executive Meets

A wen attended meeting of en- thusiastic members of the Music Festival executive was held at the Y.M.C.A. yesterday afternoon with the president. Dr. G. D Steel. in the chair. Three county vice-presidents. Mrs. George Hume. Mrs. J. P. Lent; and Mr. Frank Cameron were present as well as the secretary. Mrs. E. Cook. assistant secretary. Mr. Malcolm Macxenzie and record- ing secretary. Mrs. Florrie Rodd and various conveners.

Since Apru 15th the number of people drawing Unemployment lu- surance Benefits in Kings and Queens Counties, has been re- duced by approxlmately 900. but the total number of claimants is still about 1200. These figures were released by the Charlotte- town National Employment office yesterday. Almost all of the

claimants have been drawing Sup- plementary Benefits which ter-

The more fav- ourable weather has made it pos- sible for building contractors to engage more men and it is ex- pected that the back to work trend will speed up in the next few weeks. -

The Federal Building now has a working force of around 100 men and the opening of the lob- ster season on May lat will make further inroads in the ranks of the I ' -3. tin ' Kings and Queen counties.

Now that the roads are drying up. highway construction and re- pair work wil gradually absorb

many men now idle in the rural districts. Officials of the Nation- al Employment Office believe that in the next month the employ- ment picture will change rapidly, and that few men will be idle by the end of May. MANY INQUIRIES

The Office is receiving many inquiries about the possibility of employmeht on the St. Lawrence Seaway. but it has been advised by Ottawa that no men will be taken from this Province, until the many unemployeu in Upper Canada living near the job are worklng. Many men arrive at the Local Office also with stories about men being needed in Labra- dor. but no men are being re- cruited for Labrador at the pres- ent tlme. and it is not known if recruiting will be carried out in this Province this year.
