Graphs and opinion polls have been flung at John Bull until he's dizzy.

Bookmakers are offering odds of 6 to 1 on a Conservative victory. In other words. Tory backers are so confident they bet 5:0 to win ti

studious men poring over slide rules tell the people day by day how they are going to vote to- morrow, and most of them plump for the Tories.

Some even boast the people's vs-rdlct will be clear to them from the first 10 results to come in from the 625 constituencies. A few say the very first result will re- veal the whole shape of things to come.

Few Incidents In Suez Canal Area Yesterday

csmo. Egypt. Oct. 94 -(CP)- Egypt tried to block the Suez Canal to British shipping today, but the Royal Navy kept the waterway open to international traffic.

A British road convoy was fired upon near Ismallla. midway along the canal a British headquarters spokesman at Fayld reported.

An Egyptian bus tried to run through a British road block in canal zone and was disabled by one shot, the spokesman added.

The looting of a British officer's home in the zone was the only other incident of the day after a series of mob demonstrations in Egyptian cities yesterday.

The French-controlled com- pany which operates the Suez Canal tonight upheld the freedom of the waterway to ships of all nations after an Egyptian attempt to bar it to British vessels.

The company pledged that it would refuse to halt any vessel of whatever nationality, in keep- ing with the no-blockade clause of the company's contract”

CALGARY. Oct. 3i-iUrz- Southern Alberta cattle owners are faced with a "catastrophe" because of a feed shortage, W. H. T. Mead.provlncial livestock com- missioner, said today:

Rain and then snow. up to 10 inches of it, prevented the cattle men. from getting feed in from the fields this fall.

This situation arrived during the greatest demand for feed-lot finishing of cattle in Alberta's his-

ry. Stampeded by the feed short- age, cattle owners have swamlpcd the stockyards here with unpre- cedented cattle deliveries. They hope that by selling the cattle now. when prices generally are ahead of those at the same date last ycanlhey will rid themselves of the feed problem.

Others are cashing in on their cattle now because of shortage of funds attributed to unharvested grain. Albout 50 per cent of Al- berta's grain was unthreshed when t.he heavy snow fell.

With More than 5.000 head of cattle and calves taxing its facil- ities to capacity. Alberta Stock- yards Limited, Calgary's only stockyards firm, today announced no further truck shipments will be accepted for the rest of the week.

There are also reports that milk might have to be rationed in Cal- gary because of the shortage of feed for dairy cows.

No Shortage At Edmonton

Both hay a.nd'straw costs about 510 more a ton in the Calgary district than in the Edmonton area. where no shortage of seed or milk is anticipated this win- tor.

Hay is reported being shipped into the Calgary district front as far away as Manitoba although freight costs are close to prohib- itive. ,

The speech predicted a boom- lng future for the west coast cement and gypsum mills and the east coast birch plant built last year with government backing, but expressed "deep regret" that a commission investigating the pos- sibilities of full-scale logging in Labrador had reported the pro- ject "umound and impracticable."

The report had stalled an ex- pected dollan release from the German Government for a firm which had undertaken the logging dsv ' r 9, but a d com- mission was on its way and would start work within a week.

The speech said the government is negotiating with three separate concerns interested in establishing a pulp mill in the island. and might contract with a European group for a second birch mill to

meet heavy market demands.

Truce Teams Resume Sessions

By NATE POLOWETZKY MUNSAN, Korea. Oct. 25 (Thursday) - (AP) - Allied and Communist truce teams today met for the first time in 64 days in -1 new effort to end the l6-months- old Korean war.

They gathered in a circus-type tent put up in a bean field near the tiny, mud-hut village of Pan- muniom. 31 miles northwest of Seoul. The new conference site lies in a no-man's land between the opposing forces. .

The 10 delegates sat down around the conference table at 11 AM. . P. M.. E. S. T. Wednesday). talk- ed for 30 minutes and then recess- ed. At 11:55 A.M. they adjourned for the day but scheduled a meet- ing of sub-committees at 2 PM. The sub-committees were pre- pared to reopen discussions on R cease-fire line across Korea, the issue that stalled the earlier truer: talks for weeks.

Hopes were bright that this time the negotiators would succeed in halting the see-saw struggl of two 500,000-man armies -whic have fought across the length and breadth of the Korean peninsula.

The old armistice talks at Com- munist-held Kaeacng. six miles west of Panmunjom, were broken off by the Reds on Aug. 23 in a wrangle over asserted security zone violations. This time, both the Al- lies and the Reds had small sec- urity guard detachments of 15 men and two officers each. They also had specific agreements in writ- lng on preserving neutrality in the conference area.

Either side could keep as many troops or guns as it wished inside their own security zones of three miles radius at Ksesong and Mun- san but mustuot. commit hostile acts against the cthefs zone.
