The total purse was up from the 1951 total of SW75”. but Ruttman's out was less than the 383,612.12 Lee Wallard took last year because Ruttmsn led for fewer laps. Each lap was worth 5100 to the leader.

Bill Vukovlch. in 11th place. won 313,803.18. of which 815.& was lap money. A 50-cent clamp on the side of his steering gear made the difference between his purse and Ruttmsn's, because Vu- kovlch was leading T man by almost half a minute when the clamp broke and put him out of the race.

At the opening of the supreme Court in Sunime -' yesterday. which was presided over by Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell. the grand jury found a true biu.in the case of Francis Arsenault. of Sum- merslde. charged on two counta (1) Indecent assault against a female, and (2) Robbery.

He was arraigned and pleaded not guilty on both counts.

This is an action involving in- jury by bus collision.

Hearing of the civil jury case of Edgar Reeves versus Hubert Agnew was set. for Jime win by agree- merit.

In the only other civil jury case, Ralph Moose versus Ellsworth E. Bernard, absent debtor. judgment and costs were awarded Mr. Moue.

He said the report showed that the majority or these were charged with offences against the liquor jaws, and said that vigilance of the police had prevented more oi- feacu from occurring.

formation) but in the new air age of faster and higher flight into more remote places. especially the Arctic they are going to be im- portant people.

You will not normally iind a Spec N in the navigators seat of an aircraft, although one died in the recent crash of a Lancaster here. Usually you will find him in a staff job. He is a brain. and I valuable brain.

Pilot"). who are the MA's of navigation; it does research work in new techniques and equip- ment; it sets training standards for the Air Navigation schools here and at Winnipeg; and, finally it trains the spec N's.

The Spec N. Course lasts 30 weeks, is small and select. and in- volves travel over a large area of the earth. The studeis are veteran navigators: squadron leaders or senior flight lieutenants. Each class includes one officer from the United States Air. Force.

Royal Air Force's Central Navi- gation and Control school (form- erly Bnpire Air Navigation school at shawbury. England. The United states Air l'brce' has nothing to match it.

Originally the sunimersld course was patterned after shaw- bui-y's. but in its four years of ex- istance it has changed in scope and emphasis to meet the partic- ular needs of navigation in Can- ada..

Roughly two-third; of the course are spent in the classroom in the study of the more abstnise points of navigation and staff subjects. Nearly one-third is spent in travel.

Each course puts in two weeks touring Canada and three weeks touring the United States. visiting research and test-and-develop merit establishments in each coun- try; it files across the Atlantic to the sister school at shawbury for a three-week tour of the United Kingdom and it ends up with an extended exercise, in Lancaster bombers, in the Canadian Arctic.

Previous Arctic exercises have been based on Goose Bay and Churchill. This year's. which is under way at the time of writing, has pushed much farther north and is based on Resolute Bay on Cornwallis island.

The existence in Canada's small- ish air force of a specialized navi- gation course with only one equiv- alent on earth underlines the ex- tent to which the RCAF is a na. vigtitor's air force. The fact that the course's "graduation exercises" are conducted in the Farther North is a reminder of why the RCAF needs to be a navigators air force.

Mount Nilrata. 14,500 feet. is the highest peak on the Island of Formosa between Japan and the Philippines.
