Enclosed is a copy of Trotting Tlnic, drawing attention in the Santa Anita. meeting which 'Il)"ll6(l there :.'estei'dny. Dr. Dave has been :1 friend of the writer -inee his college days at. P.W.C., and that is quite a long time ago. Trotting Time gives a. good play- in) for the race meeting which will run for 40 days. with racing ii-oni Tuesday through Saturday until May 10. There will be eight races daily with the exception (if Saiiirdny when nine will be held, This is the 7th annual meeting promntctl by Bernard Kearney under the auspices of the Western Harness Racing Association since the time he first brought Amer- ica's greatest trotters and pncers west of the Rockies in 1946 and it will officially open the 1952 har- ness racing season in the US, A.

A rich program of stakes is be- ing presented, this year's sched- ule of ea,rly closing events being lughllghted by the s25.000 added iuoney Golden West Trot on Ap- ril 26th and the 525,000 added money Golden West Face on May 3rd. Santa Anita Park will be at its very finest for this harness meeting. The swank club is being opened to the public this spring and the beautiful grounds will be maintained in the same excellent shape as during the thoroughbred racing season. It is one of the finest racing plants in the world and in one of the most perfect settings.

The 1951 meeting was held at Hollywood Park last fall from October 5 through to December lst, and the 40 days racing at- tracted over 300,000 fans. High- light. of the meeting was the track and Western harness record of l.5B'.i by the pacer Dudley Han- over. It stands as the fifth fastest race mile in pacing history. On the trotting aide Pronto Don, the 1951 horse of the year, was un- beaten in four starts there, turn- ing in a mile in 1.5933 for a new track and Western harness race mark for a trotter, and he also won a 11,; mile race in 2.30Al:. which is a world mark for that distance. Joe O'Brien and Benny Schus shared driving honors at the meeting. O'Brien scored with in wins for his second straight Western harness crown in this division. Benny schuc was the leading money winning driver with 348.981. to his credit.

The annual meeting of the Un- ited States Trotting Association will be held at the Huntington Hotel in .Pasadena, Calif.. on March 23-24. This marks the first time in history that the U.S.T.A. has met in California. The invi- tation to go west for the annual conclave was extended by Bernard Kearney, general manager of Western Harness Racing Associa- tion and a director of the U.S.T. A. for the Western States. U. S. T.A. president Lawrence B. shep- pard and the other members of the official party will arrive on Saturday morning. March 22 and will attend the Western Harness Racing program at Santa Anita that afternoon. Many of the di- rectors who have their stables racing at Santa Anita will remain for most of the meeting. The Yonkers Trot News is a :racy little publication published by Yonkers Raceway. Yonkers. N. Y. Referring to (lily Crippen, the man that unexpectedly won the Haniblelninim. richest harness horse stake in the world lust Aug- ust. at Goshen, N. Y.. it. states: ”Cl',t'iiif! Last iyeiir. of course. he had special reasons. He won the Hamblcton- tan and a flock of other purses bringing his total to 5131.000, of 'which he got the usual 10 per 'ceni. That was above the weekly fees he collected for handling his various charges. Crippen is a man of many interests. Next to racing he likes fishing most. and he is also keen on hunting-and dogs, with which he has a remarkable way. Last winter at Azalea Park in Florida he had four with whom he constituted the Crippen Sing- ing Quintette. that entertained the horsemen in their leisure mo- mcnts. Besides Mainliner, last years I-lambletonlan winner,Crip- pen has other stars in his stable belonging to Ralph Kroneing of Milwaukee. Wis. They include Lord Stewart and Highland Ellen. For the 1952 Hambletonian he is preparing Beau Brtimmel, half brother to Mainliner.

Johnny Simpson. who was top driver in America last season with earnings of over 5300.000 raced a stable of upwards of 50 horses and as they were entered in various places he had to use the quickest means of getting around that could be obtained. Last fall his young daughter was asked, with other students in her class, ”What Daddy Did." Remembering his heavy schedule of plane trips to drive in big stake races is- round the country, she said. "My father flies round and round and every once in a while comes home."

The top poor man's horse of recent years is the pacer Red O'Brien 2.03'-fit. Four years ago Oscar Undeberg bought him for 5200 and after developing him a bit tried to sell him for 31,000. since then he has gone on to fame and fortune. Last year his winnings were over 526.000 and his all time takings ran over 545.000.

Nils Benglsson. one of the larg- est tomato and carnation growers of Sweden. is visiting in the Un- ited states and hopes to complete arrangements for bringing his three-year-old trottcr Bulwark. to the United States to race at Yonkers and Roosevelt. He raced once in Sweden as a two-year-old and was a winner. Mr. Bengtsson has 25 racing Standard Breds. 50 brood mares and two stallions at his 300 acre farm in Malmo. Swe- den.

There is grcat interest taken -in harness racing in Sweden and prior to World War Two Swedish horses raced at German tracks in Berlin and elsewhere. Notwith- standing the difficult situation in Austria harness racing is carried on quite extensively, also in Italy. Rich Italians frequently buy some of the best trotting prospects in the U. S. A. France also goes in for harness racing and French trotters make quite a good show- ing under the conditions prevail- ing there. This year they won the biggest purse, the Prlx d'- Amerlque, at Vlnccnnes near Paris.

Carl Mackenzie, Race Secretary of Trurn Raceway, Ltd.. has sent us his i952 program with racing dates commencing May 24 through Thanksgiving Day. The estimated purse distribution will be 360,000 and they are featuring the fol- lowing early closing events: No. 1. The Islanders came and also to winning their first game on Saint John ice this sea- son. They appeared well on their way to victory at the end of the first period but the steady grind of five games in 35 many nights probably told the difference in the last two sessions. Its a lot to ex- pect the Islanders to win in Hali- fax tonight considering that they have played every night this weei: while the Saints havn been rested since Wednesday but nevertheless the game should be a close one and the Islanders may have the pleasurp of eliminating the Saints on Halifax ice from any chance of climbing into second place. 0 I O

The Saints have proved good drawing cards since Christmas and one of the reasons is that thev usually always have a new face or two in the lineup. Another player is on the way to Halifax but it is not known here if he will arrive ir. time for tonight's game. He is a right winger by the name of Ford who comes from Syracuse Chiefs in the A. H. L. Ford is a 22-year-old player who saw service with Springfield last year and account- ec? for 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points. He is small, weighing only 154 pounds and reputed to be very fast. He comes to Halifax as a replacement for Frank Bergeron to Buffalo.

Queen Square School came from behind in the final period last night to eke out a 2-1 win over Prince Street in the City Inter- scholastic League.

Davey of Queen Square fired the tying goal assisted by Carroll and George Macauigan. T. Shephard scored the winmr on a play with Hughes. Dave Mncliieod opened the scoring in the first period after taking a pass from Whitehead to account for the only P.S.S. goal.
