Updates were also given on Touch Nature, Operation Lifeline and the Breeding Bird Atlas. The Conservation Advisory Committee of the ( Natural History Society is still looking for new members who would like to look in conservation/environmental matters and be more active in ensuring that our Island is looked after. Please contact Sue Stephenson or Gary Schneider at any meeting if you are interested.

Members voted to provide $100 in prize money for the next Science Fair. First prize winners will receive a cash prize plus two honourable mentions will be awarded in each age group.

The society was also brought up to date on the Boughton Island proposed development, and again the need was stressed for letters to newspapers and politicians voicing your concern.

Mark DesMeules, who is with the Vermont office of the Nature Conservancy, talked to members about the protection cf natural areas.

The tasks of the Nature Conservancy are identification, design, protection and management and Mr. DesMeules told of their work in a lively and enter- taining way. Special thanks to this Island visitor. And to Ruth Richman for taking notes at this meeting for the newsletter.

Finally here

It's finally here! What began as an idea for a calendar years ago has now taken shape in the form of Island Wings, a colouring book of Prince Edward Island Birds

Needless to say, just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong, but the end result was worth the wait. Connie Gaudet's drawings make it visually exciting for children and adults. The colouring book features 12 birds (one representative of each month) in suitable habitat. They are the Snow Bunting, Common Merganser, Canada Goose, American Robin, Common Flicker, Yellow Warbler, Great Blue Heron, American Kestrel, Herring Gull, Blue Jay, European Star- ling and Evening Grosbeak.

Commentary on each bird was provided by well-known Island naturalist and Natural History Society director Geoff Hogan. They are geared towards the children who will be colouring the drawings, and help to make Island Wings educational as well as fun.

The colouring book also contains a table on Spring migration on P.E.I. (special thanks to the P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation for permission to reprint it) and some notes on the Natural History Society.

Drawings, notes and design (by Island Naturalist editor Gary Schneider) were all donated, and the NHS hopes that the sale of the colouring books will raise funds so that other publishing projects can be undertaken in the future. Island Wings sells for $2.95, and will be ( available at all NHS meetings and functions. It is also available at Island bookstores (including Geoff's Bird's Eye Nature Store) and the P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation.
