Miss Anthony did not lock up from her reading. The would-be cus- tomer shook his head with a help- less gesture. He walked on.

It was far from being the first time that Larrimore H. Cutter had studied Jacqueline Anthony. His interest in her had been roused ac- cidently, but strongly, while idlin; with pipe and newspaper in a re. tired corner of the lobby, a vantage point that gave him an unlmped ‘- view through the stenographers door which chanced to be open.

The alrl was encased with a cus- tomer at the moment. A stout man, sxpensively tailored, sat beside the desk scanning a number of typed sheets. The stenographer was re- garding his with an appealing, if not worried. air. Hoping that there were no errors in her work. Cutter decided. He found himself sharing her hopes. She was too pretty for anyone to be finding fault with. The man from Montreal partially shield- ed his face with his paper and con- tinued his observations. i-le wondered what color the stenc- grapher": eyes were. They should be brown. A soft velvety brown.

She was pretty. And tlainty, somehow. She had swung her chair about and sat with one slim knee crossed upon the other.

Now she was smiling. Doubtfully.

It must be that fat guy couldn't find any errors. He looked like a theatiical agent or race-track man. Cater. took an instinctive dislike to him, whatever he was. He resented the way the fellow leaned for- ward, grinning in that self-satisfied manner. Asking hcr how about stepping out tonight, like ss not.

Well, he didn't get far with that.

Cutter chuckled as he saw the atout customer rise to his feet. It must have been a turn-down. And taking it out on the girl now by squawking over his bill. but little Miss Stenographer was gravely business-like. She counted out change, smiled dismisslveiy and turned lock to her machine.

After that, Larrimore Cutter grav- itated instinctively to that same corner chair during the many hours he found its convenient to sit in

noyed if anyone else appropriated his private observation post. After several sessions of this furtlvc watching, he discovered that his fanciful reveries over this shining- haired girl left him unsatisfied. He was filled with a growing desire to make her acquaintance. He wante to sit in the chair of dictation. wanted to hear her voice. And to make sure about the color of those eyes. That bother him most of all. He was quick to notice that she never encouraged idle conversation with callers. When she was not otherwise engaged, she read. As a rule, it was a magazine or news-

paper.

Obviously, the solution to it all was to walk into that little oflice and ask the girl to take a. letter. Cutter smiled grimly to himself at the notion. He never had dictated letters under similar circumstances . . . would flounder and make a complete ass of himself, most like- ly. He might fake a letter . . . read something and pretend that he was making it up Not a bad idea. Yet‘ he found himself strange- ly loath to undertake the experi- ment. It might spoil everything and. after his hours of dreaming, that was unthinkable. .,

So matters stood when he made that lucky purchase at the cigar counter. The salesgirl tad gnelt him the lead he needed. Cutler wondered rather uncomfortably if she had noted his vigils. What of t?

The next morning, his paper read, he nerved himself to the great ad- venture. It still rained. With high resolve. Mr. Cutter strolled resolute- ly into the stenographers cubicle.

"Good morning." he said gruffly.

Miss Anthony looked up with a start. A quick gesture and the of-

. fending spectacles were removed.

She laid them beside the typewriter, on top of the magazine she had been reading. Cutter was rewarded with a friendly snails.

The Long Creek Women's In-

‘stituta met at the home of Mrs.

Annie Stretch on January 10th to convey their good wishes to her son, Wilred, and his bride. On the absence of the president, the vice president, Miss Axmie MlacPhee- called the meeting to order and stated the purpose of their visit. The secretary treasurer, Miss Myrtle MacLeod then read an ap- propiate address while Mrs. Jessie MacKenzie presented the bride and groom with an upholstered arm chair. Wilfred, in his usual pleas- ing mimner, thanked the members for their kind words and beautiful gift. "For They are a Jolly Good’ Couple" was cheerily sung. The evening was pleasantly spent in playing games and in singing. A delectable lunch was served by the Institute ladies and a pleasant evening was brought to a close by singing "Auld Lang Syne”

Trolleys Thrill. For Eskimo Girl

SEATTLE, Jan. 15 —Last winter. Myrtle Ivanoff, 15, spent most of her waking hours crouched near a hole in the Bering Sea. ide off her native Nunivak Island. angling with wire hook, ivory sinker and a. seal sinew line for Tom Ccdflsh.

For in the Arctic. women must fish if the people eat.

This winter. as a guest of two former government school teach- ers, Myrtle spends some of her time at a window watching auto- mobiles whizzing by- She's even ridden in one and she has heard trolley wires spit and sputter in- stead of listening to the crackling of the northern lights.

Last winter she wore mukluks on her feet, sealskin mittens on her hands and a heavy parks of reindeer. miuk and Wolverine for a. coat. The temperature was 30 below zero.

This winter she wears‘ patent leather shoes and light stockings. light house dresses and she has seen no ice. '

She will start in the fifth grade at school. She's shy and a little bewildered by new sights and new sounds and new words. But she learns fast . ~ . "Her mind's a regular vacuum cleaner", said her hosts, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Sprung- er. They taught school at Nelson Island, Bering Sea, for i0 years until last spring. Myrtle was g Dllllil there for a few seasons.

Mrs. Sprunger was lonely here, so the Sprungers sent for Myrtle.

‘There's only one thing missing here. she told an interviewer. That is "cold." "I am going to write about it all to my father," she laughed. “I have a new word too." She used the new word when asked how she likes the idea. of go- ilig to school? "Swell!"

Two Flin Flons One In Manchuria

Flin Flori, in Manitoba, is much in the public eye by reason of the gold mining operations being car- ried‘ on there. But there is another Flin Flon, in Manchuria. and not so long ago a letter posted in New York addressed to Elin Flon in Canada, found its way to Flin Flon in Manchuria and after a delay of two months it reached its destin- ation in Canada, according to an item in the current issue of Can- adian National Railways Migazlng, Some postal clerk, who, evidently, must have been well up on plgm names in Manchuria, deposited the letter in the "China" bag. probably, at first glance, reading Manchuria for Manitoba. The letter was an important one and telegraphs and cables were brought into use in an endeavour to trace it.
