One Man not Expected to Live.

Rare Presence of Mind Displayed.

Amuerst, May 20. River Hebert was in a state of terrible |} excitement yesterday. Albert Bowles, a |} colored man employed by Jotham Smith, of | River Hebert, returned home much the worse | f liquor. Adispu'e arose over some work

Bowles perceiving this tried to entice him back, but being a little suspicious Smith refused to go. Thereupon Bowles pulled out a revolver,pointed it at Smith and ex -laiming “I will l-y the villain low,” fired across the street at him. Smith though not hit dropped to the ground in order to avoid a second shot. Bowles thinking he had killed his intended victim, placed the muzzle of the revolver to his own ear and fired two shots, the second entering his head. Medical aid was summoned and with difficulty the bullet was removed He now lies in a very low condition, and but faint hopes of his recovery are retained.

England's Commercial Welfare

L rd Salisbury, in his speech at Hast ings, said a danger to England's commer- cial welfare is growing up under the exist- ing free trade system. ‘Foreign nations,” he said, *‘are adopting protection—they are excluding us from their markets, and trying to kill our trade. Free trade doctrine may be noble, but it is not business hike. We live in an age of war of tariffs and the important point is that while other nati are negotiating to obtain each others commercial favor there is none an- xivus about the favor of Great Britain. Why! Because Great Britain has stripped herself of both armour and weapons with which the bsttle is to be fought. The free trade doctrine may be noble, but it is not business like.”

A DISASTROUS HURRICANE.

Loss of Life and Property.

Advices from Mauritius state that a hur- ricane, unprecedented in violence, passed over that Island on April 29ch, causing enormous damage to shipping. The ma- jority of the vessels at the Island were biown ashore. Mary lives were lost. Half of the crope of sugar, rice and coffee is utterly ruined.

The first sailing ship to arrive at Mon- trea! from sea is the Pictou bark Yuba, Capt. McKenzie, with coal. The Yuba will charter lumber to Montevidea at $10.50 per thousand, which is very low. Less than ten years ago the same ship chartered to River Platte with same cargo at $22 50 per thousand.
