TORONTO. Jan. 14-(OP)-The Ontario Lands Department is :0- ing to the rescue of a railway section foreman pestered by Algonquin Park beavers that build dams and threaten to flood the tracks.

The foreman. A. Hoffman, wrote the Department that he has tried everything from home-made water wheels to, under-water culverts in attempts to discourage the beavers and keep his tracks dry. He can't shoot at the beavers. because they are in a game sanctuary.

Department offflclals said sat- urday that forestry men will bait baskets. trap the beavers without hurting them and deport them to northern points where their un- tiring efforts may be better appreciated.

CITY POLICE COURT - At the Sii-pentdiary Magistrate's Court Saturday, two men charged with being drunk and incapslble were each sentenced to 20 days in jail. while two others appearing on the same charge were each re- manded for seven days. A man convicted of non-suvpport -was sen- tenced to 30 days in jail 3nd I man appearing on a charge of theft had the charge withdrawn at the request of the prosecution.

Child, Has leg Broken: Eight Traffic -Accidents

Gary Neilsen. three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Duke Neilsen. Charlottetown is.a patient in the Prince Edward Island Hospital suf- fering from a broken leg and oth- er injuries he received when struck by a car on Saturday after- noon.

.The accident was one of eight which occurred in the City on Saturday. The other seven accid- ents were of minor nature.

Gary was hit by a. car driven by a Souris man as -the--young,lad along with two companions were crossing the St. Peter's Road. near the Jail. In addition to receiving a broken leg he suffered multiple bruises about the. face and head.

Poor Driving Conditions

The majority of Saturday's ac- cidents werc blamed on poor driv- ing conditions. Five occurred at intersections, while the remaining two involved parked cars.

The first took place at the Royal Bank Corner when a car backing out of a. parking space struck a car travelling north on Queen. Time of accident was 10:40 Satur- day morning.

Shortly after noon two cars col- lided at the corner of 1-iillsboro and Kent. About an hour latter two more cars collided at the corners of Queen and Euston Streets. At 6.40 in the evening a car travelling west on Passmore Street was in I collision with an auto proceeding south on Queen. Slight damage was in-':urred in all accidents. '

cars took place at the corner of Kent and Pownal streets. one car proceeding north on Pownal re- ceived slight damage to the front left fender and running board. Time of the accident was 8:10 P. M. A little over two hours later two more cars collided at the inter- section of Prince Street. The car travelling east on Grafton suffered A broken front fender. running board. and bent axle. The driver of the other car. an out of town resident, was taken into custody on a charge of drunk- en driving. . The eighth accident of the day occurred at 6:15 Saturday night when a car proceeding north on- Elm Avenue collided with a park- ed auto. The right hand side of the parked car was slightly dam- aged.
