PUBLIC MEETING AT MONTAGUE BRIDGE.

A large meeting of electors was held in Montague Hall on Wednesday, 2nd Feb., Hon. Thomas Annear in the chair. All the candidates were present. The policy of the present Dominion and Local Govern- ments were ably defended by Messrs. Me- Donald, Muttart, and Cyrus Shaw, Esq., ae, es Messrs. McDonald and Mauttart were nominated by Cyrus Shaw, Esq., and sup- ported by Messrs. Wm. Sullivan, Robert Dewar and others, which nomination was carried by a large majority. The meeting was most enthusiastic, and the prospects of the Liberal-Conservative candidates are above par. Murray Harbor District will give a good account of itself on election day in behalf of the popular candidates, McDonald and Muttart. POLITICAL MEETING AT BAY FORTUNE BRIDGE

—THE SECRETARY'S REPORT.

A number of electors, approximating one hundred and fifty, assembled in the School- house at the above mentioned place on Tuesday evening last, to hear recounted the great political questions of the day regard- ing the Dominion.

The meeting, having been organized in due form, every one present listened with ardent attention to the several speakers. The representatives were unable to attend being engaged in holding meeting in an- other part of the County,

The principal speakers were John Me- Lean, Esq., M. P. P.,and Mr. J. G.Sverns. They gave good plain common-sense speeches of considerable length, for which they were highly applauded. They were followed by Messrs. Keefe, McQuaid, Cant- well, McBride and Macdonald, whose speeches, though short, were very pleasing ones.

Having resolved to send a report of this meeting to THe Examiner office for inser- tion, this pleasant and very enthusiastic meeting which was almost unanimous for the Liberal-Conservative Party, ended in three cheers for the Queen and Macdonald and Muttart.

Nevertheless this end of the district will give a good account of itself on the 22nd inst., and will roll up a good ma- jority for the peoples candidates, McDonald & Mattart. 1 was looking over my pass book to-day for 1878, the last year of Grit one sided free trade rule, and in comparing prices with 1885 1 find the following result; On Dce, 14th, 1878, Ll sold 40 bushels oats at 26c., cash, $10.40. Sir, ~Will you permit me to direct the attention of temperance workers to the political campaign now going on in Prince County. Ido not know, nor does any one else know the true policy of the above named candidates upon this question, as they make promises to both sides. J am not an ultra Scott Act man, but ao man of any shade of politics can fail to see the good work that the temperance movement has done in securing an intelligent vote at our elections. Not many years ago nearly every rum seller in town and country had to be subsidized at election times at a cost of from one to five hundred dollaxs,and very independent they were at it. They simply named their price,or demanded that their ‘‘ House be opened” and rum _ sup- plied adilibtum, they to be paid by the candidates, anda good stiff payment in advance was required. They would tell the candidate that if he did not do it, the other side would-—in the end they got it from one party or the other. Temperance men and others were congratulating themselves on this system having been put down by the Scott Act; that the rum traffic had got so low that respectable politicians had ceased to make capital out of it ; that in fact its usefulness as a power at elections

has gone. Messrs. Yeo and Perry however, appear to think different, Mr. James F. White, of Alberton

prides himself on being a barroom politi- cian and an eloquent speaker. A few years ago he was dismissed from the Cus- toms at Alberton for misappropriation of funds. In one instanse he suppressed the entry of a vessel witha valuable cargo of merchandize, collected the duties and got off with the boodle. He is one of the most notorious violaters of the Scott Act in the whole Dominion. He has been fined, and re-fined, and the Supreme Court has more than once had its time taken up hearing this worthy’s appeals. Yet this is the man whom Messrs. Yeo and Perry take round with them to their public meetings to address the electors in the cause of purity. He was withthem at Summerside, Mis- couche, Cape Traverse and other places, but the good sense of the people at all these localities refused to hear Mr. White, and administered a severe rebuke to Messrs. Yeo ard Perry for attempting to foist this man’s views upon them.

On behalf of the independent electors of this County, I for one protest against such influence being used in this campaign, and trust that a proper rebuke will be adminis- tered in consequence of it to Messrs. Perry and Yeo on election day. TEMPERANCE,

Cardigan Notes.

Despite the Grit cry of ‘“‘hard times” trade at Cardigan Bridge is fairly active. The other day over fifty teams were noticed pass- ing the Bridge within one hour.

Mr. J. F. Norton is busily engaged building a wharf near the Bridge, which, when com- pleted, will be quite an acquisition to the shipping accommodation.

The trade in Limestone engages many teams, who at this season of the year, haul it to the farms of the surrounding country.

Politics are waking up. The Grits are holding caucus meetings every week, and are pretending to be making quite an effort for Robertson aud McIntyre. They say they are not well organized; but the great trouble with them is they have the wrong side of the ques- tion. The people have no confidence in their political fibs; and the 22nd of February wili show once more that “honesty is the best policy” for politicians as well as ordinary mor- tals. The Liberal Conservatives are well or- ganized, they have the best sideof the ques- tion, their men are working quietly with a determination to win; and if other sections of the County do as well as Cardigan, the Gov- ernment will have two supporters frem Kang’s County.
