Since that time. heavy losses have been recorded from ”bot- ulism". as well as the normal year-In, year-out summer losses due to heat. During recent months,-ills fur ranchers in the United States were forced out of business due to depressed mar- ket conditions during the sale of the major part of the 1956 pelt crop. Heavy losses were also suffered by a great many fur fan- mera in the past whelping sea- son. These kit losses happened

Denmark and Fin- land. which sent in a total of 1,043,000 pelts to the U.S.A. OPTIMISM

Our comment on the above is that despite the large number of pelta exported to the United States there has been an almost unlimited demand for mink. and it must be remembered that in compiling the averages. as re- gards price. a large proportion of the mink raised in the Un- ited States and also imported from European countries. was of mediocre quality, suitable only for trimming purposes.

We have talked to our mink farmers in this province. and we have also heard from mink fai- mere in Nova scotla. New Bruns- wick and Newfoundland. and none. of them have been pessimistic about the future out- look lor mink. There is no doubt that. similar to the silver ion farming era. there were thous- ands of people who went into mink farming without any idea of what a quality animal is.
