This has been the invariable practice of Lib- eral Governmenis in years preceding elections, and present signs and symptoms, including the budget, 4n- ciicate that the King Government has its eye on the coming event.

BIG DAY IN WASHINGTON

The inauguration of t J Hoover takes place at Washington today, andelaborate planshave been made to make the event a memor- able one. A Washington dupatoh says that from the Peace Monument to Washington Circle, fer beyond the white House. Pennsylvania Avenue reverberaies from early morning until dark to the staccato thump of ham- mers completing hasty construction- of temporary stands from which thousands will view in inaugural pa- rade reminiscent in its proportions and color of the glittering cavalcade that saluted newly inaugurated Pre- sidents in past administrations. The quiet dignity of the White House lies hidden behind a pine board stand, occupying the entire stretch of broad pavement in front of the mansion, from which notables will watch the parade.

A feature of the inaugural cere- mony will be the presence of a num- ber of native Indian Chiefs from dis- tant states in recognition of the fact that Vice-President-elect Curtis is a descendant of the Kaw nation of In- dians. The presence of_ the Indian Chiefs, who, doubtless, will wear all the toggery of their offices, will give color to the occasion. and otherwise, it is announced, the ceremony will be more spectacular than any since Wilson's time.

While it' is freely admitted that

Canadian imports from the United States have increased considerably

during the past year, it is claimed by supporters of the King Govern- ment and its tariff policy that this is all to the good, as a large part of the American imports was in the shape of raw materials for Canadian industries end commodities, such as citrus fruits, not produced in Canada. Upon this disputed question, e. par- tial analysis of United States sales to Canada, published recently by the American Metal Market of New York, may throw some light. The compil- ation deals with some of the com- moditles of which the sale in Cen- ada was greater in 1928 than in lil- 27 -

Sales of freshfruit increased from $23,381,000 in 1921 to 025,137,599 in 1928 and sales of fresh vegetables rose from 05,082,767 to 05.701331] some of this fruit may have been of the citrus varieties that are not grown in Canada and some of the vegetables may have been sent to the Dominion in seasons when auch food- stuffs were not otherwise obtainable in this country. While that is so. large quantities ‘of both fruit and vegetables, according to the Canada ion growers, were dumped in Canada during the season when domestic products were being marketed. Bales of cotton and its products amounted to $44,171,000. They included , no doubt, a considerable quantity of raw materials for the circadian cotton manufacturing industry, but they also included some 10,000,000 yards of bleached and printed cotton fab- rics valued at some 02,310,000. Chem- ical products, including drugs and medicinal, drains and tanning chem- icall, fertilisers and paints and varn- label. were valued at osmium Not all of tboee, surely, were of kinda that could- not be made in Canada.

The C. P. R. Weekly Supplement tells that announcement has been made that a new Dominion Atlantic Railway hotel is to be built at Kent- ville, N. 5., and that the news has been received with enthusiasm, not only among commercial men but the general travelling public as well. At the same time the railway is the sub- ject of a good deal of favorable comment for the part it is playing in developing Nova Scotla and the Annapolis Valley as a tourist ground. It would afford great pleasure if over here like favorable comment could be made for like reason. No Prov- ince in the Dominion has so great a. need of one or more of such hotels as the railways have built, or under- taken to build elsewhere in Canada.

[All other Provinces than our own have municipal county and town- ship councils. Premier Ferguson is understood to propose that these mu- nlcipal bodies shall raise twenty per cent of the fifty per cent. which Ontario must provide for Old Age Pensions. Prince Edward Island has no municipalities with which to divide the burden. Thislncreases our difficulties.

Premier Rhodes estimates that the yearly cost of Old Age Pensions to Nova Scotlo if introduced in Nova Scotle. would be 02,200,000. This is based on the report of the royal com- mission appointed to an estigate the problem. This is the first official u- timate so far published on which a rough guess may be mode as to what the cost might be to the three Mari- time Provinces.

The population of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island together is something less than that of Nova Bcotia so that it may be assumed that some 04,000,000 would be involved if the scheme were adopted by the three Provinces. ‘Phat would be rath- er a. formidable addition to the pres- ent demands upon provincial treasur- ies that are by no means overflow- ing.

But old age pensions are undoubt- edly dceirable and have been adopted in leading civilised countries. The money raised for this purpose is also distributed at home within the Pro- vince, less the coat of administration, and it would in some cues relieve the aged and indigent poor from the stigma of paupcriam. which is fre- quently incurred by no fault of their own. Both aid of the question should be carefully considered.

BENEFITS AND DANCERS 0F - IASTING While there can be no question that abstaining from food—festlng- is one of the most valuable forms of treatment in medicine, there can ' be no question but that pro- longed fasting for everybody is very unwise.

When you feel a little below par, your first thought should be to get off your feet and do without food entirely, except perhaps a. little wa- ter.

This not only rests the heart, but gives the system a chance to gradual- ly get rid of thepoisons that are in the blood. .

If your doctor tells you that your trouble comes from overeating, then after fasting for a couple of days, it would be wise to go on what is called a “low diet."

‘This consists of what is known as "filling foods." foods that satisfy the appetite m- feeling of hunger, but yet do not contain as much actual food value- as other foods. _

Dr. H. Determan suggests a vege- table rnarrow salad, then a cup of beef tea, followed by a large dish of steamed vegetables with meat flavor, and a. spicy salad, finishing up with raw or stewed fruit and a. cup of coffee.

You can readily see that meals like the above would have a great volume and would certainly fill up the atom- ach. .

These meals could be kept up for a. few weeksduring which time the various organs of the body would get a chance to continue working all right but not under pressure.

A diet such as above would be valu- able where the liver and kidneys have been overworked, in cases of high blood pressure, and’ where there was much overweight»

So although a complete fast of a day or two would likely be good for everybody sick or well, it is quite.un- safe to fest for any greater length of time unless under‘ the supervision ofyour family doctor. Many cases of complete cohapse have been due to prolonged tests. If you are a big eater and want to fast, your doctor will be only too pleased to see you do it, under his care, because it cleanses the system and gives the organs a rest. .

The low diet is a safer proposition where the general condition is below normal.
