The Hudson Bay lloute

Churchill and the Hudson Bay railway and water route ‘is the subject of an interesting lead- ing article in a recent issue of the Canadian Geographic Journal, in which both the history and the prospects of this route are discussed. The article does not refer to this season's act- ivities but states that during August and Sep- tember of i946, nine grain ships cleared Chur- chill, loaded for Europe. Same three million bushels of grain went iiito their holds. Lumber arid flour shipments were made on the same vessels.

"This," says the article, "is but a trifling amount compared to the traffic that could op- crate out of the northern seaport. The draw- back is that the ships have rarely carried much inbound cargo. A two-way traffic of commod- ities is vital to the full use of the railway and port. To warrant ships putting in to Churchill, they must carry inbound cargo, china, twine, machinery. The high tide of imports was reach- cd in i935, with 2,580 tons of general cargo, window glass, bagged and bunker coal. The argument runs that western Canada cannot of- fer a large enough consumers‘ market for such goods; that some of the cargo might be of a timely nature, such as binder twine for the har- vesting operations, is tru-e, but relatively unim- portant. The Hudson Buy route offers the most direct passage not only to the Canadian Prairie Pnovinces, but to the American Middle West, to British Columbia and to the Orient.” Noth- ing is said in this connection as to the possibil- ities of shipping grain to the Maritime Prov- inces, with which Prince Edward Island is por- ticularly concerned.

, It is stated that in navigating Hudson Strait and Bay, captains now depend largely upon the gyro-compass, superior to the magnetic compass which is subject to polar disturbances. lladio and direction-trading stations have added greatly to the safety of the route, and it is be- lieved that another two months of navigation could be added with the use of radar in avoid- ing the ice fields. "There are hopeful signs that Canada's northern port will come into its own before long," the article says.

Australia's Proud Boast

During the year ended June 30th, i947, there was no fatal accident on scheduled pass- enger air services ih Australia. In the some per- iod, Australian airlines flew approximately Z3,- 000,000 milcs—3l par ccnt more than the previ- ous l2 months and carried 860,000 passengers, an increase of 6796. So far this year more than 400 people have died in commercial plane crashes outside Australia.

Biggest single factor in Australia's high standard of safety is the admirable discipline shown by air lines, pilots and ground crews under the controls established by the Department of Civil Aviation. The Department provides the air- fields and radio systems, frames the air naviga- ticn regulations, licenses the aircraft and the personnel who maintain and operate them.

The director of Air Navigation and Safety said recently that Australia exercised more strict control over the movement of aircraft than any other country in the world. lf necessary, pre- ventive measures are enforced at the expense ol regularity of passenger and freight services. Generally speaking, however, this is not neces- sary and Australian services are as quick and efficient as most other overseas.

The Civil Aviation Department also insists on strict and regular ground inspections. Three certified ground engineers licensed by th-e'De- partment make o daily inspection before a flight begins. After this inspection, each engineer signs a certificate of safely, which is counter- signed by the captain of the aircraft.

After a day's flying, a special maintenance squad goes over the machines bolt by bolt ac- cording to an elaborate routine. After 60 hours‘ fhght, a machine goes through another special inspection routine. Every twelve months, each plane is totally dismantled and every part thoroughly overhauled.

When accidents do happen, they are most- ly due to the human element rather than to any deficiency in the system of inspection and con- trol. Experts estimate that 70% of air acci- dents throughout the world are due to pilot error. ‘

The Prince Edward Theatre management is to be congratulated upon obtaining such a finc picture as Dickens‘ masterpiece, "Great Expect- ations", for showing during the balance of Exhi- bition week. This is cn English production, the leading characters, "Pip" and Estella being taken by two well-known English stars, John Mills and Valerie Hobson. The picture is magnificently filmed to music supplied by the National Sym- phony Orchestra. Naturally it does riot take in all the scenes of the book, but the cutting is judiciously done and the leading characters are exceptionally well interpreted. The old English settings are perhaps what will charm Dickens lovers most in this production.
