On April 7 and 8, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) held its annual meeting.} ’ ‘1

' ' A ' ' Although the-outlook for endangered species_ is not always optimistic, there was a positive note to COSEWIC's 1992 deliberations: the Tundra Peregrine Falcon was downlisted from "threatened" -to "vulnerable", the least serious category._ '

This spring, the committee added 18 species or populations of plants and-animals to its official list, bringing the total up to 231. The COSEWIC list continues to grow because a backlog of hundreds of possible candidate species still exists. Until this backlog is dealt with - a process that will take years - a fair number of species will be added annually.'
