Bennett, Prime Minister, for second reading of the Government bill establishing a tariff board of three members precipitated strenuous debate in the House of Commons today. It also resulted in the moving of an amendment from the Liberal oppo- sition ranks with the force of a want of confidence motion in the Government. The amendment-which was moved by J. L. Ilsley. Liberal member for Hams-Kings, provided that the bill should not now re- ceive second reading and asked the House to declare that. any tariff board entrusted with the duties sot out in the bill, should at all times be such as to enjoy the confidence of the Government of the day. The demonstrators secured a num- ber of boards off a truck and used these as clubs.

Ben- nett am-iouneed in the House of Commons this afternoon. His Maj- esty's Government and the United States Government were being not- ified of the decision. Rt. Hon. MucKenzie King, oppos- ition leader, expressed concurrence in the stand of Premier Bennett. Members of the House, Mr. Ben- nett stated, are familiar with Pres- ident Hoovcrs striking proposal for the postponement during one year of all payments of inter-govern- mental debts. The initiative which the United States has taken is a. notable contribution to the restor- ation of sound economic conditions throughout the world. If carried out, the suspension ofidcbt pay- ments for the coming year will give a. breathing space to heavily bur- dened countries, help to restore the confidence and hope iésseritial to business revival, and set large sums frec for economic reconstruction.
