Porators—The market is steadier, but jthe supply of most kinds continues liberal, | and no higher prices can be obtained. | Eastern Hebrons are scarce and command ,65c., but Northern rule much lower. ; Houlton Rose are selling at 60c., and Nor- ithern Rose at 50 to 55c. P. E. Island. Chenangoes are firmer, and some are held at 48c., but sales have been mostly at 45c.

Fish—There has been a further improve- ment in trade, and the situation is more encouraging. Old Mackerel are held with more confidence, as the receipts of new so far have been small, and there is a fair chance of working off the stock on hand without further concessions. We quote old Shore No. 3 at $4 to $4.25, and No. 2 jat $5.50 to $6 per bbl. Nova Scotia Mackerel continue slow of sale. but prices are steadier. Last sales of New Mackerel at $4.75 to $5 per bbl. Codfish continue 'dull at $1.50 to $1.75 we qtl. for large jpickle cured Bank, and $2.50 and $2.75 for ange dry. In Pickled Herring there is {nothing doing except ina small: way, and prices are on a low basis. Strictly medium scaled Herring are in demand at lfc. per ibex, but large are slow at 12 to 14e. | New Lobsters are selling at $1.60 to $1.65 } per dozen cans. | Eaos—Eastern extras have not been so iplentiful the past few days and 12sec has _ been more veadily obtained, while some are |held at 13c, but other kinds are plentiful |enough a prices continue bit Nova Scotia and P. E. Island firsts sell at 114 to 12 cents.

HALIFAX PRICES.

May 20, 1886. Fish—There have been a good many lots of shore codfish arriving the past few days from Cape Breton. which have been sold at from $2.20 to $3.00 per quintal as to quality. A small lot of bank fish stored last fall were sold this week at $1.75 per quintal. There has been nothing doing in mackerel ; market everywhere is very dull. New fish are showing on the shore, but are very small in size. “The only herring sale worthy of note was @ lot of Bay of Islands at $1.25 per barrel. Market is over sup- plied with this cliss, as well as with last year’s split.

WEST INDIA PRICES.

Advices from the West Indies have in some cases been encourag others the very reverse. In eae F locke. port cargo of codfish realized $22 per tierce, while in Jamaica there is an over supply with & de- clining market. Last quotations from Havana were codfish, $55; haddock, $5, and halibut, $43. $e

The Fisheries Matter.

The Toronto *‘ Mail's: ’ special cable- gram from London says: A few hot-heads here are endeavoring to create some feeling over the seizure by the Canadian Govern- ment of the David J. Adams, at Digby, N. S., but the whole fishery question is ** ca- viare to the general.” The feeling is that if Canada is wrong in her interpretation of the treaty of 1818 she will have te vield, and if she is right she will still have to yield, as the Imperial authorities will not embroil themselves with the United States on a colonial question. The subject came up in the House on a motion of Mr. Charles Vincent, M. P. for Central Sheftield, ask- ing for information. Mr. Morgan, Under Colonial Secretary, read a cablegram from Lord Lansdowne, giving the details of the seizure and the assurance that no question of territorial waters was involved. The House was perfectly passive, and at the present time it would require a very weighty colonial question to divert the at- tention of the members from home affairs.

An Historie Wreck.

The ancient wreck reported exhumed by the sea near Peaked Hill Bars life station, Mass., is, without doubt, that of the Somer- set, a British man-of-war of 64 guns. She took part in the battle of Bunker Hill, covering the landing of the English soldiers at Charlestown. After the evacuation of

Soston she went south, but re-appeared with other ships one day in November, 1778, chasing the French fleet. Encoun tering a heavy northeast gale of Cape Cod, she was driven ashore a wreck, Several of the crew of 480 men were drowned, but the larger part were captured by the Continent- al militia, and marched to Boston as wisoners of war. The ship was looted by the inhabitants of Provincetown and Truro, and guns and ammunition turned over to the Continental Army. Relic hun- ters visit her daily for momentoes and large pieces have been sent to Memorial Hall, Plymouth. | Traces of her port holes are still visible, also 22 foot draught mark on her massive stem.

Gladstone's Opponents,

The London ‘ Daily News” says that the importance of Lord Hartington’s meet- ing of the 15th, lies m the evidence that al] Mr. Gladstone's Liberal opponents are united. Itis hopeless to try to conciliate Mr. Chamberlain. it simply remains to ae severe with the second reading of the Hom Rule Bill with the almost certain evodinect of defeat. The withdrawal of the Bill would be practically worse than defeat. The country will either sanction Home Rule or we shall endure a period of Tory Government, during which the Liberal seceders will become reconciled to Home Rule, which will be sanctioned on the next appeal to the country. The connection of Mr. Chamberlain and Lord Hartington des- troys the chance of a Whig-Conservative coalition. Everything points to a dissolu- tion of Parliament early in the coming

A Desperate Escape.

Rosette Mathieu, a girl undergoing in- prisomment at the St. Joseph Female Prison at Lyons, France, made her ese: “ape a fortnight since, and was recaptured a few days ago at Grenoble. While before the Judge she stated that the treatment she re- ceived at St. Joseph was such that she-was determined not to be taken back alive. She said the fare was not only insufticient, but frequently uneatable; and that in addition to the authorized punishments, which were any and = severe, the prisoners were subject to the spiteful treatment of the female wardens, which often took the shape of ingenious tortures. On her way back to Lyons, while in the cellular wagon in which prisoners are conveyed, she fainted, as frequently hap- pens. owing to the want of ventilation in these cells on wheels. and she was carried to the doorway of the wagon. that the fresh air might restore her. On regaining con- sciousness, she suddenly pushed the attend- ant aside and leaped out, falling at the side of the track. The train was stopped as soon as possible, and a guard sent back. The place of the girl’s leap was clearly indi cated by marks on the embankment: but the prisoner could not be found, nor has any trace of her been yet discovered.
